I believe they is referring to UNC, but it that's the standard against which Sac measures itself then...

Why - both had close wins at Sac (so yes in front of Sac) but NAU beat Davis, SUU lost.

NAIA has less strict academic requirements than D2 no? So an NAIA could potentially be stacked with D1 non-qualifiers yes?

FWIW SOU was ranked entering the season and made a playoff run last season.
DII standards are low enough, not a lot of DI talent at the NAIA level, the bigger difference is that the NCAA isn't looking over the shoulder and there really isn't much enforcement in the NAIA, A DI guy playing at the NAIA level is more likely to have not been able to pass a drug test than to have not passed the academic standards of DII.

I could have sworn I saw SOU mentioned somewhere as being BOTH NAIA and NCAA D-II, but I can non longer find the references. (Those cross-overs DO exist, but now I must accept that SOU does not fit that category.) It's well known, though, that many NAIA schools are roughly equivalent to NCAA D-II (particularly Carroll).

My point, though, in equating SOU to a NCAA D-II, however, was NOT to screw with UNC, but to remember a certain somebody who got beat a few years back by Chadron State....

As an Eagle fan, let me be the first to throw out a "No Goddamn Way" on Eastern being #1 on this list. The EWU/North Dakota game was basically a toss up that wound up looking like a semi-beat down because the Sioux couldn't hold onto the football. Weber State played Eastern with 22 points, which is about half the margin everyone else has been bombing them out. And three games ago, Eastern got pistol-whipped by Sam Houston State.

I'd say Montana State, with one bad hiccup on their record, deserves more consideration as the #1. You could argue for Montana or even NAU to be above Eastern. Hell, the physical way in which Montana pounds the ball scares the hell out of me, because anyone motivated to run the football has found a sieve in the Eagle D.

The Eastern that showed up to play August 31 against Oregon State, yeah, that team was great. But they haven't been seen since.

But what about SUU??? Are you guys going to be able to compete this weekend?

SOU is a member of the NAIA's Frontier Conference, joined last year. It seems like they were DII just a little bit ago but they are now fully NAIA. They were an NAIA independent for awhile before joining the Frontier Conference. Being that my alma mater, Rocky Mountain College, also competes in the Frontier Conference, I do keep tabs on them somewhat. My own opinion, I'd put the Frontier between DII and DIII. I don't know about the rest of the NAIA, but the Frontier is no slouch in football at that level.

Having watched SOU take on Rocky earlier in the year, I was under the impression that while there were some DI talent on both sides, there was no way either team should have been close to any Big Sky team. Then came the Sac State/SOU game... :o

I could be wrong, but I've always thought Western Oregon was the only D-II program in the state. There are lots of sub D-II programs to compete against, but Western Oregon has historically had a helluva time scheduling games, including playing many teams twice in the same year.

Below that, you've got Eastern, Southern, Willamette, Lewis and Clark, Linfield, Pacific, and next year George Fox starts their program.

So when CP gets beat by the griz, what's going to be the feeling? Griz are back and are contenders or are we gonna see the bobcat special and hear "you haven't played anyone" "cal poly lost to Yale they are not good"? I km just wondering how the rest of you feel. I think CP is legit top 4 or 5 bigsky team and tough to stop.

More a quality win but it would still show up as being against a sub .500 team. Cats have a close loss against an FBS and more if a quality win/pounding against NAU vs. any of the Griz wins.

Meh, it's all non D-1 to me. No FCS school should ever come close to losing (or actually lose) to any of those programs.

I am on the fence about this. I feel like we just had a bad game against NAU and they had a good game. I am trying to temper my optimism for this year. It will all shake out in the end and by next Saturday night, we will know if we stand a chance at the big sky crown this year or not.

Are you headed to the Eags vs Griz Kalm? I got my tickets. :thumb:

Yeah, because we'll have MADE them a sub .500 team. In any event, I fully expect people to doubt us until we run the table and win the conference title and autobid.

Yep, heading over Friday morning some time. Will be hitting up Reds, the Rhino, Mo Club, etc that evening. Need to collect my shot of crown from Grizza and yell back at Polson a little.
