Crazy Punt Block

Post by SuperHornet »

We talk about this all the time, but it's ALWAYS in the form of an exaggeration. THIS is no exaggeration, folks, and it's the first time I've ever actually seen it.

He didn't do anything wrong - you always take the inside guy. Guy comes around the end & does that the kick took too much time to get off. Snapper & punters fault.

I think the problem was that the punter was too close to the line of scrimmage. Aren't they normally about 15 yards back?

Venus: I've always known the punter to line up 13 yards back unless backed up in the end zone. I've seen an old article written by Marv Levy back in the days he coached at Coe College espousing what he called the T-Punt formation, based on the old Straight T (i.e. full house backfield), but with the fullback lined up ten yards behind the quarterback vice the normal five. With this hybrid, a team could run any play in the playbook except fullback dive (but they could still hit the same holes with a sneak), PLUS, the defense was forced to make a decision about how to play it: if they took the formation seriously as an OFFENSIVE formation, the quarterback would call for the center to snap his ball through his legs directly to the fullback, who would kick it over the safety's head. The other options would be to play it straight as a punt, in which case, the offense would run a normal play. If the defense tried to split the difference (i.e. send back a return man, with everyone else playing base defense), the offense would kick anyway, because the one man back would be devoid of blocking. In THAT kind of situation, a kicker could get one off from close to the line. In a "normal" punt formation, it probably wouldn't pay to be closer than 13 yards (and in HS, 15 might be better, as you mention). In the case of the video, though, the punter looks to be a standard 13 yards back, so the blocking SHOULD have been fine, but your idea of 15 might have helped. They might have made such an adjustment the next time around....
