Broncs at Pats
Denver led 24-0 at halftime only to have NE score 31 unanswered. Peyton just tossed a TD to tie it up.

Re: Broncs at Pats
NE was interesting in that they won the toss but took the wind to start OT. I'm not sure that affected the outcome much, but OT was pretty much a punting duel until an idiot Bronco touched a punt declined by Welker, allowing the Patsies to escape with the duke, and avoiding the kiss-your-sister situation seen earlier in the GB-MN game.
I hadn't heard of a team making this choice since reading about Abner Haynes' boneheaded botch of the choice to open OT in the Dallas Texans-Houston Oilers AFL Championship Game. "We'll kick to the clock," intending to take the wind. As soon as Haynes said the word, "kick," his fate was sealed. Fortunately for Dallas, the Texans were able to force a SECOND overtime, where they won it on a FG.
Conclusion: It's dangerous to choose ANYTHING other than the ball to open OT, but it's not always a death sentence.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

I think you forgot that the overtime rules changed. It's not initially sudden death anymore.SuperHornet wrote:NE was interesting in that they won the toss but took the wind to start OT. That sort of depends on the type of first score. A TD or safety will immediately kill the game. I think THAT little bit ought to be removed, though it IS a step in the right direction. There were WAY too many OT games getting decided by the toss. IMO, the way it OUGHT to be is that WHATEVER happens on the first possession, it becomes sudden death on the SECOND possession, so the other team has an initial chance to respond.
