Who gets to decide what qualifies as a legit religion? What is the criteria?
The people who decide if it's OK to put up the displays. Ask them. You asked me if I would allow it and I answered very clearly.
So if those people decide that only Christian symbols be used, you'd be ok with that?

If one religion is up, then others should be up...every single other religion or belief should be up...even if only one person worship that religion. The majority should not be able to prevent a minority from expressing their beliefs. Pagans, Buddhists, Mansonites (or whatever they are called), etc.

In addition, a symbol of reason should be up.

What if I have more personalities than that?

Do you think God has days when he doesn't believe in himself? Like days when WBC protest?

Does that make him an atheist?

I'm going to found a religion called "Longhornism". Anyone who wants to join me is welcome. I am going to see if I can get statues of Ricky Williams, Vince Young, and Beevo at this place.

Hey, that would actually make more sense than what these guys are doing. I would at least be pretending to have the religion and I wouldn't be mocking any other religion, just Sooner fans.

These freedom from religion types need to get a life.

And I'm thick? That's what I said Kalm. The problem with the folks in the story is they themselves said they do NOT worship satan or anything like satan. So why would you let them put up a statue of something they don't believe in? Their intention was clear.

All hail Lord Hanuman!

Members of the world’s oldest faith would like to join a display of religious symbols at Oklahoma’s state capitol, joining a Judeo-Christian tablet and a proposed Satanist monument.

The Universal Society of Hinduism plans to submit an application to the Oklahoma State Capitol Preservation Commission for permission to place a statue of Lord Hanuman on the statehouse grounds.

“If the Oklahoma State Capitol was open to different monuments, we would love to have a statue of Lord Hanuman, who was greatly revered and worshipped and known for incredible strength and was (a) perfect grammarian,” said Rajan Zed, president of Universal Society of Hinduism.

The whole thing is silly including the insecurity of Christians placing the Ten Commandments there. But if one is allowed, they all are allowed whether you believe it's a mockery or not. The reason...there are some who would want to treat any alternative imagery, serious or not, the same.

One what? Image of their faith? Satan is not an image of their faith. This would be like me asking to put up a swastika if there is a menorah allowed. It is not an image of my faith, it would only be an affront to Judaism.

There is a difference between simply allowing the expression of one's religious beliefs, and then there's the displaying of religious beliefs on public ground. I don't think there's any argument against the idea that any one person is allowed to express any specific or unspecific religion. Anyone can believe whatever they want and say so publicly. But as it is unlikely that any public space could hold a display of every religious belief, and likely in equal space, the requiement that any public space that would be used for a religious display accept any and all religious displays only serves the purpose of eliminating all displays from public space. I don't think the courts share that view and I don't see them moving in that direction either, especially with displays of religion that also seep into the secular (like a Christmas tree for instance). We're not going to whitewash all public spaces of anything that could be considered religious in nature, and we can't display 3 million different religious beliefs, so there's always going to be some push and pull between what is displayed and what isn't, and it's going to come down a lot on how many people back such a belief.

Don't matter Hen. This group is interceding on behalf of the thousands of satan worshipers out there.

It's unfortunate we live in a christian/catholic dominated society where there's no toleration for alternative beliefs, especially atheism and satanism. It's a clever move to do this under the guise "sending a message of tolerance" as the real satanists would surely lose their jobs and livelihoods if they were ever publicly identified.

Huh? Maybe they would be fired if they worked for a Catholic organization, but what makes you think they could be justifiably fired for having that religious belief from any secular, public employment? People don't get fired for having religious beliefs that aren't in the majority, they just don't. The real America and your distorted view of it due to your hatred of religion are two entirely different things. You're welcome to come back to reality whenever you think you're ready.

You're in fantasy land if you think the christian wing nuts who pollute every nook and cranny of society would tolerate an open satan worshiper on the team.

Like I said to Hen, the tyranny of the majority. Haven't Christians been a minority too at times. In fact some might say its a miracle the church ever survived its early days.

We have plenty religious symbolism available on private land. What's wrong with just a few trees and some shrubbery?

Oops....both clearly symbols of animism, paganism, and Ni.

We're really defining tyranny down quite a bit if it only manifests itself in the refusal to allow a religious display of the minority in a public/government space. I mean, we still allow people to have that belief and to practice that belief openly, so apparently it's just not the old school version of tyranny anymore. But it's fun to claim it I guess.
