Senate donks vote to cut military pensions

Post by BDKJMU »

Way to go, donks (along with house conks who voted for the same thing). :ohno:

Senate GOP fails in final bid to restore military pension cuts to budget bill

"A final effort by Senate Republicans to halt cuts to pensions of military retirees failed late Tuesday, after Democrats blocked an amendment to the controversial budget bill.

The two-year budget agreement, which cleared a key test vote earlier in the day, was expected to get a final vote no later than Wednesday.

Ahead of the final vote, Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., tried unsuccessfully to use a parliamentary tactic to force a vote on the amendment, which he wrote to undo the cuts for military retirees.

A provision in the already House-passed bill would cut retirement benefits for military retirees by $6 billion over 10 years.

Sessions wanted to instead eliminate an estimated $4.2 billion in annual spending by reining in an IRS credit that illegal immigrants have claimed.

He and fellow senators argued the bill unfairly sticks veterans and other military retirees with the cost of new spending.

“It’s not correct, and it should not happen,” Sessions said on the floor.

"By blocking my amendment, they voted to cut pensions for wounded warriors," he said afterwards. "Senators in this chamber have many valid ideas for replacing these pension cuts, including my proposal to close the tax welfare loophole for illegal filers, and all deserved a fair and open hearing. But they were denied.”

Sessions’ office claimed the vote Tuesday to block the amendment was a vote to "cut military pensions instead of cutting welfare for illegal immigrants."........."

The bill lifts the discretionary sequestration spending caps, and contains tax increases (fee increases = tax increases). It immediately increases discretionary spending by 63 billion over the next 2 years in exchange for "promises" of future spending reductions, some not for a decade. Where have we heard that before? :ohno:

That's probably not far from the truth.

The whole of Europe has been perfectly willing to allow us to do their military spending for them for more than 60 years. The next 30 will be interesting to see how they react to a resurgent Russia and a recalcitrant America.

"Is the choice between keeping the government open and screwing all the military retirees? Is that that right choice?"~ Sen. Graham
Listen here, Sen. Graham, if it comes down to running our country and paying people for their past service, then we have to chose the greater good.

Now, I'm not saying this isn't wrong, but the over-arching fact is that our country can't continue down it's fiscal path. Sacrifices have to be made. We're in the shape we're in for a reason and it's on all Americans to get ourselves out if it. There is no easy way out. If military retirees have to lose roughly $4,000 a year in pension then so be it. For those that can still work, maybe they should go get a job, even a part time one. You work for 20 years, get out around 40-50 yrs of age, and then collect a pension for another 30+ years (not to mention Tri-Care). People are living longer, at 40 yrs old, you can leave the military and go into the private sector. My in-laws, both retired after 20+ years in 1999, went to work (defense contracting and education) and are set to retire for good next year. They planned ahead. They aren't happy about losing 1% of what was promised to them, I get that, but then again, they are happy they are still be rewarded for their service.

We're talking about a 1% COLA. I know it sucks but if we keep going down this road retirees might get shafted even more.

Yeah, because there certainly wasn't any other areas of waste that could have been cut instead of violating a contract.

Oh there is waste everywhere. But if we want to have an honest conversation and get the deficit reduced, we can't have any sacred cows. Military, defense, entitlements, Big Oil, Big Auto, Big Pharm, Big Hair, Big Ben..... all of them are on the chopping block.

Ibanez is spot on. Everything should be on the table as far as cuts/reductions to get the financial issues back in order. And this is just the COLA adjustment so everyone calm the fuck down. What happened to the “just live within your means” mantra from the Conk posters regarding reduced income issues like this?

AZ methinks you wouldn’t be so upset if this was a reduction in a union pension COLA increase somewhere and their “contract” was being violated.

Lastly if we don’t want to take care of our wounded and disabled troops, maybe we shouldn’t send them off into shithole places to fight wars for unknown reasons. Just a thought.

The Union pension contract isn't with the United States government. Also, those Union people weren't putting their lives on the line and destroying their bodies defending our right to be idiots.

You missed the point. And only a small portion of the military is in a combat role.

Again, everything is on the table. This is a COLA reduction. Supplement the income.

I am sure there a similar argument can be made for those union peeps. They did work for years and they want their entitled compensation. Some probably have health issues due to their jobs.

And before anyone tries to think otherwise, no I am not trying to diminish the sacrifice those troops have made.
