NCAA should be embarassed
Re: NCAA should be embarassed
I know a guy who lives in Dallas and went to the game. He said he was in the field after the game today and that not only did the roots not take hold, the grass was only green because of paint. He seemed to think the grass was completely dead since the ice storm...
Re: NCAA should be embarassed
The cheap bastards could have yanked that dead crap off the ground anytime last month and dropped in deep root sod. Frisco doesn't deserve an opportunity to host again

They kept it in Chattanooga for 5 more years after the 2004 debacle, and that was worse than this incident. Don't be surprised to see the NCAA insist on an artificial turf upgrade like they did with Finley, though.Herd wrote:The cheap bastards could have yanked that dead crap off the ground anytime last month and dropped in deep root sod. Grass is fine, as long as you don't re sod it within a couple of months of being played on.JohnStOnge wrote:Field turf at the least. Oh Flagstaff as well I guess...
The Linc in Philly is grass and has the Eagles and Temple playing on it, + the Army/Navy game, and it works fine. If they re sod it at all, they probably do it in the Spring.

Re: NCAA should be embarassed
You think the NCAA is going to pay for Dalla FC to have soccer specific fieldturf - that is removable - and for the stadium to have football specific turf in storage 355ish days per year. Turf that couldn't have a team/logo in the middle of the field because multiple football games are played there. Turf that couldn't have anything in the endzones for the same reason. Turf that would need replacement endzones and middle sections to get the schools names and NCAA logo for the current championship at mid field - a one time use thing. That shit isn't cheap. Oh, and then pay for the stadium to have a crew to install and take out the two sets of turf whenever it needs to be changedMvemjsunpx wrote:They kept it in Chattanooga for 5 more years after the 2004 debacle, and that was worse than this incident. Why not play the game at Cowboy Stadium? They don't use it this time of year.

Huh? They played the Cotton Bowl the night before. And even if they didn't, that will look great if you get 2 teams that don't travel well. Imagine 10k in a 100k stadium....Even if had 20k would still look like crap.kendradad wrote:Why not play the game at Cowboy Stadium? They don't use it this time of year.

Who said the NCAA would pay for it? Whoever's in charge of hosting in Frisco finds a way to switch the field on their own dime or they lose the championship game. That's what I meant.clenz wrote:You think the NCAA is going to pay for Dalla FC to have soccer specific fieldturf - that is removable - and for the stadium to have football specific turf in storage 355ish days per year. Very good defensive players are coming back. Very good foundation coming back. They will be a playoff team.
They have a chance.

FWIW, the radio announcers said that the timing of the sod was the same as it has been the last couple of years, but an ice storm this year screwed things up. I blame Gore.clenz wrote:FC Dallas played their last home game Oct 19, fwiw.93henfan wrote:

Not that 2 weeks would have made a huge difference...but no reason to wait until Nov to get the sod laid when the season was done Oct 19
Re: NCAA should be embarassed
The NCAA resodded the Rose Bowl immediately after the Rose Bowl game - they started while the TV cameras were still broadcasting the trophy ceremony. That field looks much nicer than the FCS game. Assume they used the deep root sod mentioned above.
Re: NCAA should be embarassed
Back in the early 90s, when the Redskins were actually good, they used to deep sod the entire length of RFK between the hash marks for playoff games. Same deal at Candlestick.elcid83 wrote:The NCAA resodded the Rose Bowl immediately after the Rose Bowl game - they started while the TV cameras were still broadcasting the trophy ceremony. Field conditions didn't seem to bother the Bison. Anyway, how about UNLV's Sam Boyd Stadium in Vegas? The field is grass, but weather shouldn't be a problem, w/ an outdoor stadium. I don't know if cost is an issue. UNLV & Vegas are planning a new stadium on the UNLV campus. If built, pretty impressive. Sam Boyd holds about 30K. I think the new stadium would hold about 40K.

But seriously, Vegas would be a very nice destination. Is there any sort of NCAA rule about hosting championships near gambling meccas? I know we went through this a couple of years ago, but I forget the answer.

Agreed. Direct (and cheap) flights from Missoula to there would mean a Griz fan swarm if we ever make it back to the chipper.93henfan wrote:Frisco TX is already too far west.GrizMadman wrote:Field conditions didn't seem to bother the Bison. I don't know if the NCAA has any rules re; this. Being in a gambling mecca like Vegas might be the NCAA's hangup, but it has to be irrelevant, since UNLV plays MWC games at Sam Boyd. The NCAA should prohibit sanctioning all athletic events at UNLV, if being next door to the casinos is its hangup.93henfan wrote:Frisco TX is already too far west.GrizMadman wrote:Field conditions didn't seem to bother the Bison. Any more, gambling is getting more widespread in the U.S. Vegas is becoming less a gambling mecca than an entertainment mecca. Yes, it's still gambling, but with more gambling going on at other places and online gambling picking up, Vegas is becoming less of the gambling mecca it once was. For one thing, the Mob is no longer there.
IOW, people can still gamble on NCAA games regardless of geographical location. The NCAA needs to get into the 21st Century, if it's still hung up on 20th Century thinking.

Well, 4 NC games, 8 teams. 6 of them were west of the Mississippi, closer to Frisco than Chatty. Only 2 who who weren't were 10' UD and 13' TU.93henfan wrote:Frisco TX is already too far west.GrizMadman wrote:Field conditions didn't seem to bother the Bison. The WCC holds its hoops there now and it seems to work out fine for them. There's also a bowl game in Vegas.
