Joe Mauer has hit 14 HR exactly ONCE in his career. In fact, in 9 full seasons he's hit more than 13 only TWICE. 105 career HR's and 28 of those came in one steroid infused year.
Mauer has never played a full season as catcher. The 14 HR is what he averages per 162 games during his 10 year career.
With him playing 1st and being able to DH I see no reason he shouldn't get to 145 games on a regular basis for now.
I saw this coming years ago and was torn on it. However, once Morneau suffered that concussion and never really recovered in Minnesota this should have happened sooner.

Extended Joe's career by at least 4 or 5 years
The last first baseman the Twins had with stats like Mauer's, is in the Hall of Fame. That player had a 162 game average of 6 HR, 67 RBI and a .328 lifetime average.

So a player with 3000 hits and 7 batting titles and 18 time All-Star, doesn't belong in the Hall of Fame?
Hey, DJH: Do you find any irony in the fact that the Milwaukee Brewers just signed Lyle Overbay to a minor league contract? Probably preparing for the eventual certainty that their current first baseman is going to turn up injured....

WTF does the Milwaukee firstbaseman have to do with Joe Mauer.

The biggest draw at Twinsfest last night was Byron Buxton He has a lot of hype coming into Twinsfest. SI article had him throwing a football 80 yards in the air in High School. Rated the #1 prospect in MLB.

Is he Mauer's replacement behind the plate?

Centerfielder, Josmil Pinto is the replacement with veteran Kurt Suzuki rotating in.

That is neither ironic or relevant to anything. You are an idiot.

We've covered that. All north-central beer-centered teams are the same.

Just when Joe Mauer restored his smooth swing, it brought more trouble by triggering his latest injury.
This frustrating season for Minnesota's catcher-turned-first baseman worsened Wednesday, when Mauer woke up with more discomfort than he had the night before from a strained muscle on his right side and was placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Zero Homers
8 Doubles
16 RBI's
23 Strikeouts
.287 BA
.353 OBP
.369 SLG
.722 OPS
Oh - and 2015 Salary - $23 Million
Thanks, Jon!
But don't worry....he'll get that smooth swing back juuuuuuuuuuuust before he tweaks a hammy, pulls a rib cage muscle, hyperextends his knee or takes a ball off his wrist and has to sit out for 30-40 games...

Imagine how good the Twinkies would be doing if they didn't have a sucking $23 million dollar hole at first base giving them ZERO production...
They would not be much different. Bill Smith took over as GM in 2007 and was fired in 2011. All-Time high salaries, minor leagues depleted. 2012 Terry Ryan took over and started rebuilding. Ryan was the GM from 1994 to 2007. He didn't have a winning season until 2001, and built a franchise that won 6 division titles in 9 seasons. Smith did not continue the process. Ryan has rebuilt the minor league system, and the youngsters are starting to trickle up to the Majors. The Twins farm system is rated number 3 right now. Hopefully my Tigers can keep them at bay when these youngsters arrive for the Twins.
Mauer's salary started in 2011, negotiated by Billy Smith. Take Mauer away from the team and you have Kennys Vargas, .258 hitter with 3 dingers and 10 RBI's playing first, minus the Mauer salary. Miguel Sano may be Mauer's future replacement.
