No More Extra Point Kick Attempts

Post by VictorG »

So the NFL is talking about doing away with the single point extra point. TD's would be worth 7 points unless you wanted to go for 2. Then if you make the 2 point conversion you get 8 total points and if you miss it only 6 total points.

Reason is, they say, because it's boring!!!

What does everyone think? It would add a few minutes for extra commercials per game which would be more TV revenue for the owners. I can see how they'd be excited about that!

Not so. If you have leakage problems on FGs, you're going to have the same leakage problems on PATs, which means blocks (the most common means of missing PATs). Games have been won or lost because of blown PATs. They're actually bailing out teams with weak special teams if they go through with this. VA Tech would have a field day in that environment.

The gamble is bullcrap. If they REALLY want to make it more interesting, they should go the XFL route: scrimmage play required on the PAT with the following caveats: If the offense wants to go for one, the ball is scrimmaged from the two. If they want to go for two, scrimmage it from the five. I'm not sure we have to go as far as the XFL did for the playoffs by instituting a THREE-point conversion from the ten. Just so long as the NFL doesn't go for the XFL's abortion of a way to eliminate kickoffs: Steal the Bacon. That resulted in a rash of injuries.

IMO, a MUCH better idea would be to bring over a modified version of Arena League rules: either mandate drop kicks for the PAT or declare that drop-kicked PATs are worth TWO. Additionally, any drop-kicked FG (or any FG of either type of greater than 60 yards) is worth FOUR points. Given the crazy way the ball has bounced since the powers that be slimmed the ball down from its near-pumpkin shape in the '30s to open up the passing game, that should make placekicks VERY interesting....

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

If I remember right the article I read said 6 of 1200 attempts at extra point kicks were missed last year.....

When I watch a game, especially the 1st 3 quarters or later if a game is out of reach, I see a lot of "just going through the motions" stuff. Stand around and watch the kicker......

I'm not saying I'm for this change but I'm not really against it either......Unlike kickoffs which I still feel are interesting.....

But I'm totally against the other ideas from arena football and the like....but that's just me.

What’s the Point?
Roger Goodell says the NFL is considering abolishing the extra point because it wants to ‘add excitement.’ Would this be a good move for the game? Peter King says yes. Robert Klemko says no. Let the debate commence

Interesting points and comments ...
Require a drop kick?
Use the rugby rule where the ball is lined up even with where it was touched down?

It will probably be difficult for MAQA yahoos to overcome the Qult programming but they should give being rational & reasonable a try.

Move the point of kick back to the 15 yard line - this is the distance that the success rate on FG's drops to 80%

I'd rather give the middle linebacker a 12 gauge with 1 shell......Unsportsmanlike penalty and game ejection if he shoots anything but the ball!

Point of kick or placement of ball prior to snap?

Only problem with that is nobody will go for 2 unless they're completely desperate.

Placement of ball prior to snap.

If they elected to go for 2, they would still line up at the 2 yard line.
