Not calling for out now and I support hockey tremendously and wish the women's game were here to stay but other countries have to give it more priority. The US and Canada have done a very good job of developing players. The other countries not so much. The Sweden silver medal happened even though we outshot the Swedes 39-18 but couldn't outscore them (2-2 through OT) and lost in a shootout. That was an anomaly though. Sweden was not within 8 goals of either US or Canada in 2010. Finland seems to be the team that is competitive this year and was the closest in 2010 (losing by 5 or 6 to the powers I believe).

Hopefully, in 4 years and 8 years it will be different but in 8 years, if there is only one other team within 5 goals of the Americans and Canadians like this year, it is tough to justify that it should remain an Olympic sport. If others start to move like Finland in the next 8 years, then great. If not, it turns into a joke event outside of the gold medal game. Not sure if any other Olympic team sport is this one-sided having this many bad teams qualify.

I know unfortunately, the amount of men in the Winter Olympics is much greater than women, but there needs to be more than 2-3 strong competitors (and all else weak) to make it to the Olympics. Hopefully, there will be development in the game.

It will stay because of the Olympics version of Title IX - plus, the expense of Olympic Hockey is the rink - so as long as there is men's hockey, no reason to eliminate women's, even if two countries dominate it.
Pretty much this.

If baseball/softball played on the same field I'd bet they'd still be around as well.

That, and it appears to bring in at least some kind of ticket revenue. The arena was packed for the Russia-Germany game.

I'm watching the replay, and it's embarrassing. 3 goals in like 8 seconds for the U.S. women...

You don't think that the Russian team playing had some impact on that?

I'm sure it did. I just looked it up, and most of the games so far have been in the 3,500-4,500 range, with RUS-GER at just over 5,000.

I got a team jacket this year and it says Coach 89 on the chest. Three times at my son's HS games I've had parents cozy up to me to make nice thinking I was a coach of the College scouting games.

At least we haven't seen anything as bad as 2010, when Canada beat Slovakia 18-0 and Sweden 13-1. :ohno:

That's because they redid the way that the Round Robins are done to lessen the chance of blowouts.

Group A - Top 4 teams in the World - All 4 qualify for next round. Top 2 get byes in the next round next 2 play in Quarterfinals. Assuming the 3rd and 4th place teams in this group win their QF matchup, US and Canada will never play any of the other 4 teams in Group B who are lower ranked.

Group B - Other 4 in the tournament - Top 2 qualify for the quarterfinals against 3rd and 4th place teams in Group A.

In 2010, Canada and the US were in separate groups. I assume the 3 and 4 ranked teams were in different groups. So in 2010, US and Canada played teams that are the equivalent of this year's Group B.

In the 12 Olympics the U.S.and 8-0 with an average mov of 32 (which could have been MUCH HIGHER but they called the dogs off).

They won their 5 exhibitions before the Olympics Jr an average score of 100 to 72....

They are something like 68-1 under coach K since about 05
I was looking at the over-all picture of Olympic basketball. USA was winning with college and amateur players up until they got ripped off by the Russians in 1972. Bringing in NBA players pushed the USA ahead again. It's a matter of time before the World catches up. Just look at the international influence on the NBA today compared to 1972.

I thought we stayed college players until John Thompson brought in his star HS recruit Alonozo Mourning along in the late80's and fucked up the gold medal. Which brought on the first Dream Team in the 90s.

True. We won in 1976, boycotted in 1980, the Eastern Bloc boycotted in 1984 so we had the easy win and then we got bronze in 1988 (losing to Russians in the semis). 1992 was the Dream Team.

Mourning was not on the 88 team though. According to Wiki, it was:
William Anderson
Stacey Augmon
Vernell Coles
Jeffrey Grayer
Hersey Hawkins
Dan Majerle
Daniel Manning
Herman Reid
Mitch Richmond
David Robinson
Charles Smith

We did, I was saying the USA Dominated until 1972, not that college players were used until 1972. Bad wording on my part.

they were dominated by professionals.

We brought ours on and it hasn't been close.

Our college guys who can't make it in the nba go overseas and have very very successful careers....UNI has two starters on one of the higher up German teams.

Is the world "closer than they were"? Sure.

They are still about 50 levels below. We could send our top level college guys and won almost every competition.

You see countries during the Olympics bragging that they have one or two all stars....we have all stars that get cut from the roster

By the way we suck at curling. How the hell do you give up 7 points(?) in 1 inning (?) when the other side only has 8 stones

The US Captain is a douchenozzle. Listen to him talk, he's got an excuse for everything. I only watched 3 innings (right, they are called innings?) yesterday against Norway and nothing was his fault, the world was out to get him.

Shaun White places 4th. Ironically, he had the highest score of the day but it was in the qualifying round. He busted his ass during the first finals run.
