Agreed. People went ape when that happened, but just like you can't fight City Hall, you can't fight Bruton Smith. Concord, NC has been trying to fight Bruton Smith, but they keep relenting--even named the street by the track "Bruton Smith Blvd." It's a shame, but they have brought trucks back to Rockingham...progress, albeit small.
I love short tracks, so seeing N Wilkesboro with grass growing through the cracks really bothers me.

I'm heading to the Martinsville race next month. Can't wait. :thumb:
I understand.

Martinsville is great. Had Hot Passes there for the spring race a few years back. Actually had a few flurries show up before the green flag. It's a blast, and be sure to eat the famous hot dogs!

The addition of the track in Newton, IA has ginger a long way in growing the sport here.

I've never been to a trace but would like to get to one down there. The place is huge. Just off interstate 80 by a mile or two but it's so big it looks like it's right off the road

I realize IMS is small for a NASCAR track but it's still huge on the horizon.

I think the only places that seat more in the state are Kinnck Stadium at Iowa and Jack Trice at Iowa State

Last year the state approved a bill for about 10 million in renovations trying to get Sprint cup races

Turns out NASCAR bought the Iowa Motor Speedway in November and the state is very close to passing a bill with $9 million in cash and other incentives/rebates. The issue is that the new NASCAR ownership is 100% non-Iowan which leads to some concern over the re-investment back into the state rather than the money straight into NASCAR pockets.

The Iowa Speedway at Newton, which was purchased by NASCAR in November, would be granted a sales tax break of up to $9 million under a bill approved Thursday by an Iowa Senate subcommittee.

Senate Study Bill 3162 would continue an economic development tax incentive begun under the previous ownership when the track opened in 2006. Iowa’s current tax law requires the track must be owned at least 25 percent by Iowans, but the new NASCAR ownership is 100 percent non-Iowan, which has prompted a request for a law change.

“We all want to see the Iowa Speedway be successful. It is entertainment and economic growth,” said Sen. Jake Chapman, R-Adel, who voted for the bill.

The measure now moves to the Iowa Senate Ways and Means Committee. Iowa Senate Majority Leader Michael Gronstal, D-Council Bluffs, told reporters Thursday he expects the bill to win approval from the full Senate. Meanwhile, House Speaker Kraig Paulsen, R-Hiawatha, said he appreciates NASCAR’s decision to invest in the Iowa Speedway, but he wants assurances efforts will be made to “make a great venue ever greater.” He also said he would also like to see the Newton racetrack cooperate with the Knoxville Raceway, which offers sprint car races, to bolster motor sport racing Iowa.

Iowa Speedway lobbyist Bob Rafferty said the legislation will continue a 5 percent rebate of the state sales tax collected at the track. About $3.5 million in sales taxes have been rebated since the track opened, and there is a potential for an additional $9 million tax break under the legislation.

The current sales tax rebate is scheduled to end in 2016, and the bill extends the rebate period until 2026. Rafferty noted that the previous owners had also received a local property tax abatement. But under NASCAR’s ownership, the track will begin paying $1.4 million annually in local property taxes, he said.

NASCAR views the Iowa Speedway as “a gem” that is the “fastest short track on the planet,” and the tax incentive will help insure the success of the facility,Rafferty told lawmakers. Current season ticket holders reside in 23 states and the new owners hope to make the facility a destination for people in all 50 states, as well as Canada and Mexico, officials said.

Iowa Speedway President Jimmy Small said NASCAR became interested in purchasing the Newton track because of the strong support provided by city and state officials.

“Everything to get it where it is today is really appreciated by NASCAR,” Small said. “We want to create a mutually beneficial venture where all parties involved benefit.”

The Iowa Speedway is a unique motor sports facility in Iowa and NASCAR is committed to building upon its strengths and creating a world-class venue, Small told lawmakers. The facility, located 30 miles east of Des Moines in Newton, features a fast, .875-mile asphalt paved tri-oval designed by NASCAR Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace.

Small said he hopes to build a stronger fan base by offering exclusive food and entertainment, and his goal is to spur growth across the entire scope of Iowa’s economy.

Sen. William Dotzler, D-Waterloo, who chaired the subcommittee, asked Small why NASCAR needs a continuation of the sales tax break.

Small replied that the Iowa Speedway needs to stand on its own and he described the tax rebate as “vitally important” to the track’s future.

Sen. Dennis Black, D-Lynnville, who represents the Newton area, joined Dotzler and Chapman in voting for the bill. There was no opposition . Black said the track’s patrons fill hotels not only in Newton, but at lodging facilities in Grinnell, Pella and in the Des Moines area, including the new hotel at Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Altoona.

“This will be a great thing for Iowa,” Black said.

Dotzler, a big supporter of the Iowa Speedway, described the tax rebate as a having the potential for a great return on investment. He said he knows that racing fans want the track to hold Sprint Cup races, but he recognizes the facility will first require some infrastructure upgrades to accommodate additional fans.

Dotzler unsuccessfully proposed an $8 million state appropriation last year to help the Newton track prepare for a Sprint Cup race. But he said Thursday he has no plans to offer such a bill this session.

Our largest venue in Delaware (Dover Downs) is 7x larger than our second (Delaware Stadium).

See that inner track? They still race horses on it. Here it was in 1965:

Junior, Gordon, and a whole bunch of other drivers might not have 1M followers on Twitter, but they've got Danica consistently following them on the track. :thumb:
