UNI Ranked #5 in NCAA Wrestling, Feb '14
Re: UNI Ranked #5 in NCAA Wrestling, Feb '14
UNI beats ODU to finish the dual season 13-0.
ODU non-wrestled their way out of a win today.
ODU won 6 matches and UNI 4 (with 3 pins).
ODU was hit with more stalling warnings/penalties than I remember ever seeing in a meet combined. Had ODU been aggressive they may have won but this trend of not wrestling wrestling has cost a couple teams Ws against UNI this year. UNI beat Kent State on criteria earlier this year and won the total points contest because of the way they wrestled.

But ended up only second in the MAC, behind Missouri.......

Re: UNI Ranked #5 in NCAA Wrestling, Feb '14
The fucked up scoring system cost UNI that one. Kudos to Mizzou for getting bonus points when they needed them but the overal scoing didn't give as much weight to being a champion (of which UNI had 4) and 4th-6th place finishes which is where Mizzou won their points on the second day.Cap'n Cat wrote:But ended up only second in the MAC, behind Missouri.......
UNI will finish higher at nationals.
UNI beat Mizzou head to head.
Mizzou can think what they want...UNI is the better team this year.

Huge difference between a tourney team and a dual meet team. Also, the size of the tournament field can change the outcome. One team might win a small tourney but lose in a bigger one.clenz wrote:The fucked up scoring system cost UNI that one. Also, a balanced team might get more tourney points at a qualifying tourney, but a top heavy team will advance more guys to the next tourney and win that one.
Good luck to UNI next week, I will be home watching.

I'll see if I can find a breakdown of points...BlueHen86 wrote:Huge difference between a tourney team and a dual meet team. Also, the size of the tournament field can change the outcome. BUT from what I understand is that first place typically gets 16 points and 5th significantly less. In the MAC tourney first place got 10 or 12 but 5th got the same number of points. UNI advanced 7 to the NCAAs...with a normal scoring system I believe UNI walks away with the title.

I don't know the college scoring system. In addition to placement points don't they also give points for wins, major decisions, tech falls and pins?clenz wrote:I'll see if I can find a breakdown of points...BlueHen86 wrote:

Mizzou deserves credit for picking bonus points in a couple matches for 5th place. However, UNI lost out on 16 (I believe) points from their 4 champions compared to a normal scoring system.
I believe at NCAAs (and pretty much every other tournament) the scoring goes 16-12-10-9-7-6-4-3. The MAC, and EWL go 12-10-9-7-6-4 That means there is only 3 points difference between the champion and 3rd place.
UNI lost 4 points per champion (meaning Mizzou gained 4 points per match and 16 total). Then they recieved the same total score for their 4-6th place finishes that they would have in a normal event. For some reason on website I visit has the final standings...but that 16 points is MORE than enough to give UNI the title.

Decision = 3 team pts.BlueHen86 wrote:I don't know the college scoring system. In addition to placement points don't they also give points for wins, major decisions, tech falls and pins?clenz wrote: I'll see if I can find a breakdown of points...

Major Decision = 4 team pts.
Technical Fall = 5 team pts.
Fall = 6 team pts.
Decision is a win by up to 7 pts.
Major decision is a win by 8-14 pts.
Technical fall is a win by more than 14 pts.
Fall is a pin.

Who cares? I wasn't addressing your conference tournament scoring system. I was just providing information to someone who asked.clenz wrote:That's not what changed...it was placement points
I wouldn't get too worked up about it anyway. You guys will finish behind a number of B1G and Big XII teams at the NCAA tournament.

UNI finished in the top 15 last year and has more qualifiers and is better this year.
I'd bet we finish between 6 and 10.
The big 10 got twice as many autos as the Mac...way more chances for points.
UNI finished 3rd nationally in dual standings and had tan wins over big 12 and big 10 schools....
However, you believe only Big 10 and 12 schools should be allowed to be d1 so...

In this tournament, only Penn State, Iowa, Minnesota and Oklahoma State matter.clenz wrote:UNI finished in the top 15 last year and has more qualifiers and is better this year.

That is how they score team points in a dual meet, tourneys aren't scored the same way. I'm also pretty sure that a win in the championship bracket is worth more than a win in the consy bracket.CitadelGrad wrote:Decision = 3 team pts.BlueHen86 wrote:

Major Decision = 4 team pts.
Technical Fall = 5 team pts.
Fall = 6 team pts.
Decision is a win by up to 7 pts.
Major decision is a win by 8-14 pts.
Technical fall is a win by more than 14 pts.
Fall is a pin.
When my son was a HS senior he lost his first match at the Beast of East tourney in Delaware, and then won 6 matches in the consy bracket to finish 7th. He had a pin, a major decision and 4 decisions. He ended up scoring 13 team points. In the dual meet scoring system it would have been 22 team points.
