Jackie Chan Thinks Chinese People Don't Need Freedom

Post by JMU DJ »

The 55-year-old star of "Rush Hour" said at a business forum in the southern Chinese island province Hainan on Saturday that a free society may not be beneficial for authoritarian mainland China.

"I'm not sure if it's good to have freedom or not," Chan said at the Boao Forum. "If you're too free, you're like the way Hong Kong is now. It's very chaotic. Taiwan is also chaotic."

Chan added, "I'm gradually beginning to feel that we Chinese need to be controlled. If we're not being controlled, we'll just do what we want."

Chan's comments drew applause from his audience of mainly business leaders in Hainan on Saturday, but prompted fierce criticism from lawmakers in Taiwan and his hometown Hong Kong on Sunday.

Hey, Chan may be right. Took a course in Chinese history years ago at UNI and my big takeaway from it was that there are people in the world, for example, the Russians and the Chinese, who, for millennia, have been ruled by iron fisted despots and such. It is in their blood and it's rather how they "expect" to be led. Another thing, the Chinese people have had a culture for 10,000 years. Things move slow for them. Shit like democracy cannot happen overnight. Further, does it even have to?

Hell, we've never been purely democratic in the United States, though we claim loudly we are. We've had varying levels of governmental control for our entire existence and we will never, ever, especially given recent circumstances, reach the "nirvana" of captialism wedded with democracy.

We are arrogant, double-speaking bullies.

I agree with Chan and can't wait for the Chinese to take us over in 10 years. This whole POS country needs a flush.

Remember Tiananmen Square? Do you think that "Tank Man" expected to be led with an iron fist, Cap'n Cat?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tank_man

I suppose the 77 million civilians executed or starved by Mao wanted to be ruled by an iron fist because of those thousands of years of Chinese "culture?"

Excuse ME? Please Link your claim on Obama.

And China is the Republican wet dream: Unfettered Capitalism, Media Controlled and Censored so nothing bad can be said, no Unions, no pesky Environment rules - in short, CHINA is what the Republican Party WANTS America to be.

No, but I do wish that those who enjoy the freedom to say and think stupid things - earned largely by those they detest - would be more thoughtful and responsible in exercising those freedoms.

Well thats one thing China has that we dont. Hong Kong is the only part of China that is Capitolist, the rest of China get assassinated if they even mention the word capitolism. Hey Just like at Tiananmen Square where just like native says ordinary citizens got mowed over by tankes just because they wanted to be just like us.

Sorry, DBJ! I did not mean to impugn your patriotism.

My point was directed at your comment that "...China is the Republican West Dream..."

I am Republican and China is not my wet dream. I DO NOT want the American polity to be more like the Chinese model with its political repression. However, I stick with my original statement: I still wish that those Americans in our free society "who enjoy the freedom to say and think stupid things - earned largely by those they detest - would be more thoughtful and responsible in exercising those freedoms."

I disagree strongly and sincerely with you on many things, DBJ, but I do not assume everything you say will be stupid (it is not) and I do not assume that you detest me or the military. Nor do I assume that all who have risked their lives for our freedom agree with my political opinions. Many do not.

If the shoe does not fit, please do not wear it.

I'll agree with Capn first bolded part. The Chinese have been use to the same way of living long before anyone was even close to settling our continent. The US was founded barley over 200 years ago and we are still learning about freedom. Women slowly got the right to vote 100 years ago, blacks 40 years, and so on. Just giving the Chinese "freedom" overnight could be very dangerous. They will have to slowly work their way there over decades.

Regarding China & the Nature of man...

What's in our hearts and the hearts of all men might be similar
but what is in our minds and our capabilities of critical thinking might be as far apart as galaxies

China is a joke... a sad yet funny joke
I would sooner die than follow that leadership and ideology

After 15 years of working with Chinese business people and Chinese run companies I have zero respect for the majority of them and their practices...

Deception and bold faced lies are the norm
disrespecting women is the standard model
High art and design are frowned on
individual thought is cause for concern amongst the leadership

PATHETIC is all I can come up with as far as a single word description for China and the Chinese
Please note: These are general perceptions based on my experiences over time - I'm sure there must be examples unlike my experiences
