2009 Philadelphia Phillies Thread

Post by BlueHen86 »

Somebody has to start one...

The Phillies win a wild one over the Natinals tonight. Four times the Natinals took the lead, only to have the Phils comeback.

The Nat's lead 2-0 in the second when the Phils tied it up.
They lead 6-2 in the fifth when Ryan Howard tied it up with a grand slam
They lead 7-6 in the sixth but the Phils tied it again.
In the eighth the Nat hit two 2-run homers to go ahead again, 11-7, but the Phils came back with 6 in the bottom of the eighth, capped by an Ibanez grand slam, and went on the win 13-11

The Natinals hit 5 looong home runs and the Phils hit two. All seven homers would have been out in any park. Tonight was an example of bad pitching. Two of the Nat's homers landed in the upper deck.

The Nat's can't field - there were at least three Phillie hits that should have been outs. All three hits resulted in runs being scored.

That's not true - I suspect the opposite is true. It's just that Philadelphia has done so much losing (at least prior to last year's World Series) that it seems that way.

When you don't win any major championships in 25 years, there is not much winning to talk about.

As of now, I retract any doubts I had in the Ibanez Burrel trade... Ibanez is carrying the team early this year and Burrel is being Burrel on the rays... I'm actually surprised because Ibanez typically starts off slow and then picks up in the second half, hopefully he can keep his production consistent all year and not tail off in the second half.

Geeze, that Josh Beckett is such a thug.

Can the Phillies keep this home run barrage up again? I questioned last year how the phillies offense would pan out at the end of the season by the way they scored most of their runs off home runs in one or two innings. If you look at the past two games, the run production has been almost exclusively produced by home runs in a couple of innings. Utley hit two jacks tonight, Ibanez hit one and Feliz also kissed one goodbye. I know the phillies led the NL with 214 HRs last year and were second overall to the White Sox (235)... think phils can keep this home run massacre going like last year?

Yes - if they stay healthy. I wouldn't be surprised to see 7 Phillies hit 20 or more home runs, with 3 of them hitting 30 or more.

Yeah, I figure the ones who average over or around 30 (Howard, Utley, Ibanez) will get there and maybe Werth playing a full season could also get there. Rollins could get potentially get there too. But that's a tough shtick to keep up.

You got that right. And none of those injuries -- yet -- have involved his smokin' hot wife!

Seriously, the Phils' chances of a third straight playoff appearance are riding on Cole's health and success.

I expect Howard to hit 40+, Utley and Ibanez each to hit 30+.
Werth, Victorino, Rollins and Feliz could each hit 20. Victorino may be a long shot - he has never hit 20 homeruns in a season before (his best is 14 in 2007). Rollins hit 30 in 2007, but he only has 1 right now, he'll have to pick it up soon to have a chance to hit 20.

The good news is that his arm seems to be fine. He pitched well in the last two games, prior to the two injuries.

He threw a lot in innings last year, having a few starts in April cut short because on minor injuries may be a blessing in the long run.

Speedbump last night against Nats. At least we finally won a home series.

BIG early series against the Mutts starts tomorrow! Go, Chan Ho!

Looks like a generally wet weekend coming up here in Philly. Hope we can get all the Mutts games in!

Phils beat the Cards 6-1 Joe Blanton gets his first win. The offense was generated by Jason Wirth's 2 run homer and a grand slam from Ryan Howard. The G.S. is the second this season for Ryan and the 7th of his career.

The Phillies are now tied for first - pending the outcome of the Marlins-Reds game which is currently in the 12th inning tied at 2 - 2.

You never bench Ryan... he's good for it... unless your league takes strike outs into account... then you may be screwed.

:?:

I wouldn't bench Howard, especially against St Louis. It's his home town and he hits very well there. He has something like 22 RBI's in 16 games there.

Yep, Howard owns the Cards. Nice to see Blanton break ranks & have a good appearance by a starter last night. We'll see what Myers does on the hill tonight.

Phils waste a good outing from Chan Ho Park - 6 innings, 1 hit and 0 runs, but lose to Santana and the Mets 1-0. The Mets run scored on a Pedro Feliz throwing error in the bottom of the 7th. Pedro never should have thrown the ball - there was no chance of getting the runner.

I'll take a quality start from Chan Ho. Maybe it's a sign of better things to come! :)
