One story one of my frat brothers told me illustrates this - he was a manager in a plant in Winston-Salem - had line managers that were both black and white. While getting to know them, he wanted to take each out individually to lunch, as a informal way to meet them. The black managers all refused to go individually, saying that if you saw a black man and a white man out to lunch together, everyone just assumed they were gay...
I think there is another side to that I have seen recently. The number of inter racial couples in the south has ballooned. This has been a recent occurence so I can't compare it to other regions since my travels are dated. As a matter of fact a black and white lesbian couple lives near TOG. Question and it is a loaded one, Do you think all Southerners are racists. :?
I was joking about Citdog but to give you a serious answer to your relevant question: No, I don't think all Southerners are racist.

I'm with Cleets in thinking that the % of racism is probably somewhat similar throughout the country although it varies in how that racism manifests. I grew up in a small town in southern Iowa that was settled by people from Kentucky. We moved there when I was 3 and there were people that thought I was an outsider because my parents weren't born there. Those people were more xenophobic than anything but that can be common in rural areas. My parents were educated (but from opposite sides of the tracks) and had lived in 4 different states before I was born. They raised me to respect others regardless of race or gender and to believe in myself because of who I was as an individual not because of the color of my skin or my religion. That open-mindedness extended to how I perceived people from other regions (although my Mom would absolutely not allow me to use the terms ain't or y'all which were common).

Then who's the racist in this example?
I lived in Greensboro for a long time, and in NC my entire life up until a year ago. I can't comment on whether we're more or less racist than other areas of the country. I will say that as a native Southerner watching the depiction of Southerners in the media is disturbing - the exceptionally strong drawl, implied lack of education, KKK cross bearing idiots. I know a number of people who take some exception to blacks or Hispanics, but I know a lot more who don't care either way.

Watch one episode of COPS filmed anywhere in the country and you'll find what is typically stereotyped as a Southerner (trailer park, no shirt, no command of the English language, etc.). It's less a regional thing than a demographic/economic stereotype IMHO. Don't mean to get on a soapbox, but it's a bit of a hot button for me when people say it doesn't exist in their own backyards. /rant

Interestingly enough (at least to me) when I moved to Arizona, the main racism existed between Hispanics and Blacks.

[quote="OL FU

I remember taking a cross country trip with my parents. One of our stops was the metropolis known as Lewiston Idaho where my father had business. Now Lewiston Idaho at the time was probably 5000 people at most. Greenville at that time was probably 200,000 to 250,000. But I remember some of the conversations with people when they found out we were from the south. I think some of them were amazed that we had indoor plumbing [/quote]

I had a similar instance in Portland, OR. I met some folks playing pool and had a few beers with them. They asked where I was from, and I told them North Carolina. Instantly, their demeaner changed and began this pseudo-drawl making fun of NC and the South in general. I had enough beers in me to ask him where he got his degree from (crickets) or his masters (crickets) and told him I had both if he thought we were uneducated. I'm no rocket scientist, but I do get upset with the generalizations - if I had said Colorado nothing at all would have happened.

And as soon as I read that, I thought "gangs" which, true or not is a stereotype on my part. It happens with many of us I suspect.

My first exposure was actually through my fraternity - we were fairly diverse - whites, hispanics, Native Americans, asians - but no blacks. I learned it was the hispanic members (not all, but enough) that were prejudgist against blacks. It wasn't until they graduated that we pledged a few blacks (not that there were that many blacks at NAU - very small part of Arizona's population). Later, while visiting our chapter at NAU, which had a large number of blacks as brothers, I noticed NO hispanic members, and heard racial remarks against hispanics...really wierd to me.

Cleets hit the mark here. It's about equal...just that the Southerners are more open about it than the Northerners.

In re: the VRA...it should be abolished. The libs have been using it for the past 15 years to muscle more "poor" and "minority" voting participation...which, of course, benefits them.

With the election of a socialist African-American President, I think their goal has been accomplished.

Expanding the VRA is merely a justification to expand crime syndicate organizations like ACORN.

Having grown up in a multicultural (Yankee/Southern) family, spent 25 years of my professional life in a multicultural military environment, lived in Massachusetts, Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, California and overseas, and living my married life in a mixed ethnic and mixed cultural heritage family with collegiate football experience at both "white" and HBCU universities, I have a few observations, based on my experiences:

-I agree with OL FU and others that the mixed kids are the most stunningly attractive, but of course I am very biased.
-Most of us confuse cultural differences with racism.
-A lot of what most of us call "racism" is bull$h1t. Witness the hatred and racist remarks directed at Bill Cosby when he started talking about family values and against Obama because he wasn't "black" enough.
-People like Bill Cosby are on to something when they talk about the racism of low expectations.
-Eric Holder was right that we are a nation of cowards, and it starts with him.
-The greatest irony and tragedy I have experienced is that most black and white southerners have more in common with each other culturally than anywhere else in the country and more than either side is willing to recognize. These cultural values include social conservatism, food, manners, family values, large extended families, patriotism, and genuine, generous, open-hearted southern hospitality.

We who descend, unlike d1b's testicles, from the aristocrats of the old south know how to deal with our former property and are able to get along with them and recognize that we will either succeed or fail TOGETHER. the members of that most vile and contemptible race known as the yankee do not.

Living in the good ol' boy south, it is obvious to me that southerners are proud of their stupidity and the ignorance towards people like me. I have some stories to tell you about my racists experiences but there are TOO MANY to list here and I won't go into details about them. I have lived in urban areas of the south and they are not as overt about their supremicists ways as in rural areas. It is so unfortunate that in 2009, that some parts of the south continues to be segregated and downright disrespectful towards anyone that has an ounce of melanin in their bodies. Some of these people look at you like you pissed in their Cheerios. It is very disturbing and downright sad. Proud of the ignorance and make no apologies, those are the people that I will NEVER associate with and proceed with great discrimination. Simply sad indeed.

you know one think I will never know is what it is like to feel racism personally. I have heard the stories enough though. With that said, maybe you should move to South Carolina. I live in a racially mixed neighborhood, work in a racially mixed office. :!: A Far cry from the old south.
