Chile up 2-0 at half. IF they hold on to win, the group is over as far as who advances?

Yes. It's over in Group B if Chile wins.

Spain will have a difficult time even if they are able to tie because of goal differential. It's really must win for them.

Netherlands right now at +5 with 8 goals scored
Chile with 1/2 remaining at +4 with 5 goals scored. Don't think so but would be interesting to see if Chile would push for 2 more goals to get to +6 and give them the tiebreak over the Dutch in case they tie on Monday.

Fun fact: The Iberian Peninsula has been outscored 11-1 in 2 1/2 games
Still something to play for for both the Dutch and Chile (I don't see anyway Spain pulls this back now, they look dead in the water - ticki tacka is apparently over). Yesterday's game nonwithstanding, I would still much rather face Mexico or Croatia (assuming one of them finishes 2nd in Group A) than face a Brazil team on Brazilian soil. Of course, in the quarterfinals you'd likely run into Italy, but once you get that deep you're bound to play somebody good anyway. It's still beneficial to win Group B and avoid Brazil.

If we did find a way to win our group, there is no-one that would be on that side of the bracket that I'd be worried about until Brazil in the semi's.

So you're saying Germany has an easy road ahead.

In reality, I wouldn't be surprised if the 1st and 2nd place teams in our group advance out of the round of 16. The 1/2 teams play the 2/1 teams of Belgium, South Korea, Russia, Algeria.

Quarterfinals is where the difference lies. US Group 2nd place team/Group H winner would likely then face Argentina while the winner of the US Group/Group H 2nd place would likely have to face Switzerland or France.

Semis you have Brazil in the same 1/2 as the US Group winner while Netherlands would be the favorite likely to come out of the other 1/2.

If I were to guess right now, Semis will be Brazil-Germany and Netherlands-Argentina but lots of soccer to be played before then.

Croatia taking it to Cameroon. Oh dal???

Croatia up 3-0, erasing their GD deficit

So if this holds, Brazil and Mexico will have four points, Croatia 3, Cameroon eliminated.

Brazil should have no problem with Cameroon and end with 7 points.

Mexico would need to NOT lose to Croatia to advance.

I want nothing to do with Belgium. They have already cleaned our clock once.

I'll take second in the group and facing Russia then take first and facing Belgium. I just hope it's not second and facing Belgium.

A non-loss against Croatia is anything but a gimmie. They've looked just as good (if not better) as Brazil so far. :twocents:

Yup - I wonder if the Brazil-Croatia game had not been played in Brazil the outcome would have been different...

Well, Mexico played Brazil in Brazil and the outcome was different.

Still no guarantee Mexico advances... but, still...

There was no way FIFA was going to let Brazil lose the first game of the World Cup :coffee:

I hope Mexico advances - good for CONCAF if they do.

Agreed - you don't want to face Belgium if you can avoid it - they are a legit side that could win it all.

I can't believe they're a "favorite" as they haven't been on this stage for a while. But they're clearly better than us.

A dark horse favorite if you will - if a team that's never won it before would do it, Belgium is at the top of that list.

Netherlands would be dark horses by that definition.

Yup, but I would pick Belgium over the Netherlands if they played each other in the next few weeks. That would be a good matchup though.

Primarily because the ref was different. Brazil- Croatia likely end in a 1-1 tie with a better ref.

Meh. You can do "what ifs" all you want. Thiago Silva should have been sent off against Mexico. Would the outcome have been different? Who knows?

Point is both Croatia and Mexico played Brazil in Brazil. Mexico got a point. Croatia did not.
