Both of your comments show how little you know of the world. Just like many former colonial powers, many of the former subjects immigrated to the home country. That is why England is full of Indians, Jamaicans, Kenyans, etc. Why France is full of Algerians, and other former colonial African subjects.
And they are full citizens of France.

Seeing about half the US team is either foreign born and/or to a foreign parent(s) is surprising. When have you ever seen that before in an Olympic team sport? A lot of the players on France's team have roots in France's colonial holdings in Africa. It's not complicated.
Asia didn't have a lot of colonies in Africa. Africa didn't have a lot of colonies in Europe.

Was a contrast to the other Euro teams I saw (Germany (also had African colonies) & Croatia (saw the lineup & think it was 8 of 11 players names ended in "IC" and 1-2 in "AC".
