Exactly.

Germany needs one to win
US needs one to advance

US has a coach that has some close ties to Germany.... I've got a feeling on a draw.

Portugal wont make up the GD but will try. Ghana and Portugal draw
I'm trying to understand this so, the # of goals goes into how successful a team in in the World Cup, not just winning a game?

For the purposes of breaking ties in the group, yes.

Got it. Thanks. I'm still trying to understand all of this. I must say, I've watched more soccer in the past week, then I have in the past 30 yrs and I have to admit I have enjoyed it. :thumb:

I agree. The Swiss-France game was intense, probably one of the best so far.

It's a tiebreaker. A win is 3 points and a tie is 1 point. If 2 or more teams finish with the same record (1-1-1), goal differential is the first tiebreaker and goals for is the second tiebreaker

So I'm trying to assess the situation. We're still not sure if the US us any good at soccer yet, correct? We historically suck ass, missed the World Cup for like 40 or 50 years and still haven't quite got our shit straight.

So we're maybe like 15th to 20th best?

If we make it to the round of 16 we're automatically the 16th best at minimum

13th in the FIFA ratings.
More world cup appearances than Portugal (i believe)
Haven't missed a WC in over 2 deacdes
currently second in a grouo that consists of the 3rd and 4th ranked teams in the world
Have a third place finish

All while soccer has been 4th, 5th,or 6th in pecking order for athletes and fans while the other countries are clearly number 1 and get their best athletes playing it. Imaging if the US could convince LeBron, Michael Jordan, Randy Moss, Walter Payton, Jerry Rice, Kobe, etc... To play soccer instead of their sports

Tomorrow, Group A and B will be decided.

In Group A, Brazil who is 1-0-1 is playing 0-2 Cameroon and should advance. Mexico who is 1-0-1 is playing 1-1 Croatia. Mexico advances with a win or tie and Croatia only advances with a win

In Group B, Netherlands and Chile play each other for the 1 seed but have already qualified for the knockout round. Loser plays the winner of Group A (likely Brazil) so both teams will have an incentive to play hard and go for the win. Netherlands has the advantage in case of a tie based on goal differential.

I have a feeling the whole concussion scare in football is going to lead a lot of parents to put their kids in sports like soccer, and hopefully that will have some positive residual effects for the national team down the line.
We still won't have anything that compares to the youth academies in Europe, though.

that's a retarded headline.

Portugal needed the win a lot more than we did.

Certainly not the worst tie in the history of soccer. :jack:

Soccer is starting to deal with the concussion issue as well, though not nearly to the same degree

He actually may have been a decent defender

And I think the worst tie in recent history, at least, goes to Liverpool against Crystal Palace. 3 goals in the last 10 minutes to piss away a shot at their first PL title.

It really depends on the context, doesn't it?

Portugal already has secured its place as an international soccer power. The US is still trying to gain respect as a legitimate soccer nation. In that sense, the US needed the win more than Portugal. It was certainly the worst tie in US Soccer history.

It wasn't a win for Portugal, but it was a loss for the US. Giving up the tying goal in the last moments of a 95' game that was so important for the US is a choke. There's no sugar-coating it.

arguably, a player of LeBron's caliber would make as much if not more playing in the EPL than in the NBA. Imagine having all of these great soccer star in leagues all over Europe coming back home to the national team for the World Cup. I want to see articles criticizing players on the USMNT just like ones that criticize NBA players who play on the national team in world competitions. That's when we'll know that soccer has "made it" in the US.

I have no idea what the PL title is or who the fuck Crystal Palace is. Sounds like a shitty casino in Reno. Meh.
