It's not just about H1N1 but everything. It's no wonder people are so damn jumpy and agitated when the president's plane flies over NY. There has been what, one death, in America? That kid wasn't even American. He was Mexican that was brought into America, probably post infection.

I don't want to say it isn't something to worry about and that we shouldn't try to prevent it from spreading but we seem to get out of whack about this stuff. PArt of it is the media. I mean 36,000 people a year from plain old everyday influenza is not a small number

ya but how many people a year get regular flu... the number we should be looking at is percentage of infected population who die.... According to the CDC 5 to 20% of the population gets the flu each year and on average about 36,000 die each year... so lets take a middle ground from 5 to 20 % and come up with a number....

That number is 37,500,000 get the flu on average, of that 36,000 die.

The percentae of the 37,500,000 who die is.... .00096%

What we dont know is the percentage of death for this swine flu or H1N1. Mexico says its 6 to 7% and world health officials are doubting that figure, but it could be, but that doesn't mean the same rate would hold up in the US where better medical assistance is available, but even if we go for 1/3 of that figure we are still talking 7.5 million people if the same amount were infected as a regular flu.

Another thing to consider is that each year millions and millions of Americans get flu shots, and while the shots are based on a prediction of what the flu will be that year it does offer protection, no one is protected against H1N1.

One last thing, while regular flu usually causes death in younger and older people or those with weakened immune systems, H1N1 us killing perfectly healthy people ages 20-50 who usually don't die from regular strains of flu.

Not trying not to take it serious because I think we should but

1) I don't think Mexico knows how many people have had the flu. I heard someone on NPR say it could be 100,000 or more.
2) We certainly don't know if the people who died were in Mexico were healthy. If you have been to Mexico City, then you know what I am talking about.
