They advanced because they made more penalty kicks, not because they had more shots on goal.

Yeah...

They also had 20 shots on goal..not 4.

Then again, do you expect someone who cheers for a country that believes they went winless in the group stage because "the devil was made at them" to understand how the game actually works?

Brazil, Germany, Argentina, and Netherlands all make the semifinals. Man, what a shocker, not sure anyone had that picked. :coffee:

The shocker will be if we get an all European final.

Yeah, I mean, how many times did you insist there was NO WAY a European team would win on South American soil? :coffee:

Really?

What "____ville" should we refer to the African teams by?

Well, about as often as I said the World Cup is relatively predictable and then picked out 6 teams that could win it (and 4 of the 6 are still alive and make up a relatively unsurprising final 4). The Neymar injury changes things, potentially, but I think Brazil still finds a way to beat Germany and I think Argentina is just better than the Dutch. That Brazil/Argentina final is still very much in play.

That wouldn't shock me either, hence why Brazil probably makes it through. Never underestimate the power of FIFA to screw around with things. And in soccer, the card system is a huge beacon of potential corruption. A well timed red card changes everything. :ohno:

Holy shit. Flipping channels and the score changed every time I passed by ESPN. It's a 4-0 Kraut rout.

Yeah, nothing FIFA or the ref can do about this, Brazil's got nothing. I didn't truly realize the greatness of Neymar until this game.

Yeah, the bottom of your prediction looks good.

The top is laughably bad.
1. Brazil
2.
3.
4.
5. Spain (yeah, real big gap between the hosts and everyone else)
6. Italy
Very predictable. 2 of your top 3 favorites didn't make it out of their group.

0 will play for the championship.

I mean, this is a pretty weak standard for a "predictable" tournament, imo.

Hey GF, I would pass you the fire extinguisher to put out your flames, but the damn thing is on fire too.

GannonFan wrote:It does seem like a lot of work just to get to this when you figure that the only teams that have an actual chance to win the World Cup are, and probably in order:

1. Brazil
2.
3.
4.
5. Spain (yeah, real big gap between the hosts and everyone else)
6. Italy
7. Argentina
8. Germany
9. Netherlands

And that's really it. I mean, it's fun to watch happen, but the end result is pretty well known. It's become the NBA playoffs in a way, very predictable.
Bump for accuracy. As the original post shows, I listed 6 teams who had a chance to win the tournament after being told that the tournament is just crazy unpredictable. Of my 6 teams, 4 made the semifinals and of course, one of them will be the winner. So Brazil didn't win, eh, it happens. But I did call out, in just 6 teams, the 4 semifinalists and correctly said only one of these teams will win. Why? Because these are the only teams with any legitimate shot of winning the tournament, and those with eyes knew it 7 months ago.

I actually find it amusing that some people are actually trying to stay with the "this tournament is so unpredictable" mantra. Is anyone really shocked with what countries are left?

Uhm. No. Now you're just making shit up.

No one said that before you posted your brilliant prediction.

There were 4 posts before yours. 1) on the CONCACAF qualifications 2) clenz wondering why it takes so long to qualify 3) and explanation 4) The 32 team field

Then, you come in and say it's predictable and that Brazil are the far and away favorites... followed by Spain and Italy.

If you can name a handful of teams in a tournament... and if one of them wins it it makes the tournament predictable... then most tournaments are predictable... so what is the point? There are upsets in March Madness in the early rounds... but, a select group of favorites usually wins. FCS playoffs are usually the same way.

And, here's my original response to your post if you need a reminder:
Skjellyfetti wrote:

Brazil are the favorites because they're hosting. But, they're not nearly the clear favorites you make it out to be.

Italy is too high on your list and Germany is too low, imo.

If it's as predictable as you claim... I expect your rankings to be similar to outcome. I seriously doubt they will be.

You bring up March Madness, good example.

What I did was the equivalent of taking 12 teams, before the tournament field was even revealed, and then have every team in the Elite 8 picked correctly, and not really sweating it either. Heck, most people are lucky to get 5 Elite 8 teams picking after the tournament field is revealed. Face it, what I said would happen did in fact happen, despite the unpredictableness of the World Cup. Oh my. :thumb:

First of all, the tournament field was revealed in the post immediately before yours.

Second, yeah - most people aren't as accurate predicting the Elite Eight - BECAUSE MOST BRACKETS ONLY LET YOU SELECT 8 TEAMS. I'm not aware of any brackets that let you select 12+ teams for the Elite Eight.
