Question - how does FIFA determine the number of berths per federation? Given the good performance by Concacaf and the miserable performances by CAF and AFC, could CONCACAF get another berth?

Nobody can answer that question. Soccer's rules are too complicated. FIFA will make something up and you'll like it.

Cage matches. First person to fall down loses. Matches usually last about 3 or 4 seconds.

No, that was the other thread. This one is about the 2018 World Cup of Non-American Futbol, which is thankfully not happening for a very long time.

I think the most they could hope for would be 4 instead of 3.5

CONCACAF is too top heavy IMO, right now its:

USA
MEXICO
Costa Rica/Panama
Then a bunch of trash...including the Canadians.

3.5 is the right amount for now, unless the other countries step it up internationally

If anything the two Feds in the Americas, CONCACAF and CONMEBOL, should look into potentially merging. It would be 53 teams and would easily warrant 11 possibly 12-13 spots and be on par with UEFA.

Although this would increase the chances of the US missing out of future World Cups, but it would definitely increase the competitiveness of the squad on a yearly basis.

You mean Honduras instead of or in addition to Panama, right? After how CR just performed I would put them ahead of both Honduras and Panama.

After the way CONCACAF played in the World Cup, they deserve 1/2 more and Asia deserves 1/2 fewer spots. Would say that South America could get an extra 1/2 (with Africa losing 1/2) but don't think so since they were home continent which leads to an advantage

CONCACAF had 3 of 4 qualify for round of 16 and 1 in the Quarters
South America had 5 of 6 qualify for round of 16 with 3 going to quarters, 2 going to semis and 1 to finals
Europe had 6 of 13 in the round of 16 with 4 in quarters, 2 in the semis and 1 winning it all
Asia was 0 for 4 to round of 16 with only 3 points (all ties) in 12 World Cup games
Africa had 2 of 5 qualify for round of 16 none of which went to the Quarters.

Honduras performed like shit in the World Cup. Lost their three matches 8-1. Not sure you can say Panama would have done better... but, it would have been hard to do worse.

Certainly hard to say that we deserved to have another team in the World Cup.

I agree they are top heavy, but Asia, Africa and Oceania are all worse.

Africa didn't fare as well as CONCACAF but they weren't nearly as bad as Asia/Oceania.

It will probably be difficult for MAQA yahoos to overcome the Qult programming but they should give being rational & reasonable a try.

Only reason I brought up Honduras is that they qualified and Panama did not. New rankings just came out today. I know they aren't great but they are what they are. US is 15, CR is 16 and Mexico is 18. Panama and and Honduras are 33 and 40. Jamaica is next at 83 so there is the big drop off.

Africa is closer to CONCACAF than Asia/Oceania in rankings and I think quality. Rankings they have 2 in the mid-20s and 3 others in the mid 30s. Africa also did get 2 teams in the Round of 16 which is why I think they are closer to CONCACAF then Asia but still a ways behind CONCACAF.

Asia's best is Japan at 45 and Asia only got 3 ties from 4 teams in the World Cup. Oceania is a joke now with top team the best as New Zealand at 101. Note that Australia at 76 is now part of Asia.

The teams we lost to are now 1 and 5 in the world - Germany and Belgium while Portugal who we should have beat but tied is 11 and Ghana is 38.

Spain dropped from 1 to 8. Netherlands went from 15 to 3 and England dropped all the way to 20 from 13 while Italy dropped from 9 to 14. Argentina moved up from 5 to 2 and Brazil dropped from 3 to 7.

So going from 3.5 to 4 bids seems reasonable.
