The teams match up well, there is no huge gap in talent levels as you people suggest.
Ranger, I gave you guys props, but beyond EWU, there's not much for your conference mates to hang their collective hats.

On your first point, Montana gets to sit at home every year and have a team travel halfway across the country to come play in what I hear is a very cold and loud place. They get teams like Coastal Carolina and their lily white and teal asses to come in and beat them for their first playoff win against anybody not named Bethune-Cookman.

Last couple years, some of the first round games: Robert Morris @ NDSU, Lehigh @ Nothern Iowa (loss for MVFC), Stony Brook @ SHSU, Wagner @ EWU, Stony Brook @ Montana State...
Gimmie a break. The last time UD played a first round game away from Newark was 1996.

I remember back in 2010 when you called EWU a flash in the pan. Meanwhile, we've been back to the semi's twice since then while UD hasn't even made the playoffs.
And I remember after 2010 when you said EWU would win three national championships in a row.

No doubt. We are fans of two teams that get a big advantage thanks to fans putting fannies in the seats. However, I don't recall the Hens ever losing a first round home game in that timeframe. How about the Griz?

A few, but all but one of them were tight games, and we won the rest in convincing fashion.

Yeah, I never said that. However...

Understood on Montana, and I don't necessarily disagree, although since we've knocked them out of the auto-bid the past several years they haven't really had the luxury of playing all their playoff games at home, sans maybe a first round game where they out-bid someone.

On the other point, the games you referenced are pretty uncharacteristic. It's usually Big Sky/Southland, Big Sky/MVFC, or playing another member of your conference. I'm not saying it's some big consipiracy...there's just a lot more FCS teams out East, and as such, a lot more weaker teams to play in both the regular season and in the playoffs (due to regionalization).

The Griz are now 3 years into their slow decline...
As the senile old coach will without doubt have them completely unprepared for this season and that playoff game last year was a clear message to the rest of the FCS that things have changed in Montana

I honestly think the majority of your problems have to do with coaching. You guys getting a new coach anytime soon?

We went from 5-6 in 2012 to 10-3 in 2013. I certainly don't want Mick to stick around long term (and he won't), but I don't see how you can begrudge a guy who willingly took a bite out of a huge shit sandwich and did a pretty respectable job. The talent well is anything but dry, and we'll be back to our old ways once we have a more long term coaching situation in place. :coffee:

I'm with you. I'm just saying that I think your coaching staff might be the difference between a 9-4 or 10-3 type season and a 12 or more win season. I don't think anyone could begrudge Mick, by all accounts he seems like a good coach and a nice man. Coaching goes beyond just the HC.

Since you're playing, "had nots", if the sideline crew had not screwed up their easy job, you'd be 1-2.

If our coaching staff shows as much improvement this year as they did from 2012 to 2013, we'll be in good shape.

But you're right. Eventually we need a new head coach, and I'm not sure there's any current assistant coach I'd want as the head guy. (Except maybe Justin Green, but it's a huge jump from RBs coach to head coach)

The last three head coaches we hired have been extremely shrewd moves (unless you're one of those Griz fans that still feels like Pflu was to blame for our troubles), so I have faith we'll get a decent guy when the time comes.

Sure. And if Taiwan had been healthy we would have won by 3 scores, and if we hadn't lost three All Americans, 4 out of 5 starting olineman to injury, and been down to a 4 string TE at center in 2011, we would have repeated.

Pflugrad is a really good offensive coordinator, but I'm not sure team administration is his thing. Could be a Peter Principle scenario. His comments both before & after the firing suggest he's far more interested in being his players' friends than in leading them. He was also able to place a guy like Breske in charge of the D and not have to deal with it—a less experienced DC may've been a problem for him. :twocents:

Just watched recording of game. Have only skimmed this bread, but this has all been pretty much said:

Impressive offenses, esp considering the fact that at the beginning of the season the defenses are usually ahead of the offenses. EWU was obviously has the better offense, biggest difference being at QB.

Those were some bad defenses, esp considering the 1st game the defenses should be ahead of offenses. Don't know which defense was worse. If the SHSU QB could throw a long ball, they would've scored about 56 also. He overthrew guys on about 1/2 doz long balls, 4 of which were wide open. SHSU probably has a little more upside with all the transfers thy took that weren't there for spring practice. These 2 team combined for 91 points and 1166 yds of offense. Think if they played again this season in the playoffs, they easily could combine for well over 100 points & 1300+ Yds of offense. Regardless, great offense and subpar defense can get you to qtrs or semis, but won't get you to the NC game.

SHSU was extremely sloppy. 16 penalties for about 160 Yds. Yeah as the commentators told us countless times during the game, SHSU had 15 transfers...

We were down our NFL OL Gradkowski and our NFL TE Baker. S Giutsi was out, too. If I recall, someone said your guy took our guy out on a cheap shot.

With Gradkowski and Baker pushing your D around, your offense would have never seen the field.
