2014: Giancarlo Stanton (?)
1995: Dante Bichette (no)
1993: Barry Bonds (yes)
1989: Kevin Mitchell (yes)
1986: Mike Schmidt (yes)
1981: Mike Schmidt (yes)
1980: Mike Schmidt (yes)
1977: George Foster (yes)

Bichette played in Colorado and finished second in the voting to Barry Larkin.
Big problem for Stanton is the Marlins are sub 500. Everyone listed above played for either a playoff team or at least one that was VERY close with the exception of Foster in '77 (Reds were 88-74 and 10 games back in second place).

He's having a historic season, and just throwing this out there, if he goes on a tear this month and hits something ridiculous like .450 his season avg would be .315 and would definitely be in the triple crown hunt.

Whoever gets him next season on their roster is going to have a MONSTER  :(

I appreciate that, but until they change the award to "Player of the Year" I have a hard time giving an MVP to a player on team that really hasn't been a playoff threat all year. So they'd be 20 back instead of 12 without him? On the chart you just posted, how many of those guys teams were sub .500?

Which player is more valuable to their team?

Just because a team is bad doesn't win a lot of game doesn't mean that a player can't be the most valuable to their team...

So your contention is the player who is the best player on their team by the widest margin over the other players on their team, or the one that basically won his team the most game should be the MVP, regardless of the teams record. I don't agree. I think it should be the best player that made such an impact that his team is actually successful. The Marlins are not.

What team faces the biggest impact if that player isn't there?

The award is Most VALUABLE Player.

Now, we can look at the definition of valuable...

From Webster's dictionary...

1valu·able adjective \ˈval-yə-bəl, -yə-wə-bəl, -yü-ə-\
: worth a lot of money
: very useful or helpful
: important and limited in amount

Now, I guess we could give the award to the player with the highest salary.

Now, what you want is the award for the best player on the best team...

Clenz, it's OK that we disagree on this, but where did I say anything close to "best team"??

By your standard, the MVP could be on the last place team. I'm not sure you'd get many people to agree with that.

Angels win today. 7.5 on Oakland and 9.5 on Seattle but both the Raiders and Sea Hawks play later tonight....

Meh. I'll be more than happy with a WC berth this year after 13 seasons of being out of contention before the AS break.

Ernie Banks won back to back MVP's on a 5th place team with a below .500 record. :coffee:

I would pick the league MVP as the player that would add the most value to any team in the league.

O's have a 10 game lead in the AL East, and the Yankees suck
Nat's have a 8 game lead in the NL East, and the Braves suck

Almost impossible to measure. Good article on the subject of MVP voting:

Marlins are 4.5 games back of the Wild Card as of today... :thumb:

But IF they do make the playoffs. To go from losing 100 games in the year he got hurt to making the playoffs with him having the season he is, then Stanton has to be in the MVP discussion, even for you.

So why are y'all having this conversation with 20+ games still to go?

Absolutely. He should get every single MVP vote. :thumb:

BTW, I never said he won't win the award. I just don't like the idea of a guy on a sub .500 team getting it. Sucks he's saddled with the Marlins, but he is.

I feel the same way about pitchers. Which is why it bugs me that Kershaw is everyone's favorite to win it.

NL MVP

Plus he meets 89's requirement to qualify for the award because the Dodgers are in first place.

Pitchers already have an award - Cy Young Award.
