It wouldn't be an upset. NAU men took second in the nation last year, and have spent some time ranked #1 in the nation this year.

Women aren't as strong this year, but still were conference champs. They stand a good chance of qualifying for nationals.

For the men, Futsum Zienasellassie and Matt McElroy are the top two runners

Nobody should beat Colorado at nationals on the Men's side or Michigan State on the women's side.

Oregon has an outside shot of keeping it close along with Oklahoma State or Syracuse but look for Colorado to dominate and repeat as champions. Nova should be the top FCS school and could fight for a podium spot with NAU a little ways behind.

On the Women's side, no chance anyone keeps it close to Michigan State. They are just by far the best team in the country right now. Georgetown could take 2nd fighting out with Oregon. The Tribe could be top 10 or 15 after a surprising upset in the Southeast regionals.

NAU wasn't that far behind Colorado 45-68. NAU and Colorado match up well 1-4, it is just our #5 is worse than their # 5 (CU's finished 13th, NAU's 30th). If any of CU's top 5 has a bad day, that could open the door for NAU, since our #6 finished 25 spots higher than their #6

Colorado didn't run everyone at regionals since they knew they'd qualify anyway.

They rested their top runner from the PAC-12 championships where they won with only 30 points with Oregon coming 27 points behind in 2nd. He was also their top runner at pre-nationals who finished 2nd overall in that race to Cheserek (the favorite at nationals) as Colorado won its pre-nats race with only 35 points and a 20 second spread from their 1st to 6th place runners. If you put him in ahead of people from either NAU or Colorado but behind the winner from UTEP, Colorado wins that comfortably 38-73 with Colorado's 6th man finishing 14th overall.

Colorado also did not race Morgan Pearson who has not run this year but finished 17th last year at NCAAs. He may be redshirting this year though as they can win the title without him.

As for the 5th man difference, a difference between 13 and 30 (29 seconds for this race) at a regional meet can be a 50-60 place difference at nationals because there are so many quality runners bunched together at that meet.

This is not to say that NAU isn't good. NAU is top 10 worthy and maybe a little better. Colorado is just on another level.

Congrats to NAU. Strong day by the team to finish 4th just behind surprising Portland and ahead of #3 ranked Syracuse and traditional powerhouses of Oregon and Villanova. Southern Utah, Eastern Kentucky, and Furman finished in 22nd, 23rd and 30th out of 31 teams as the only other FCS schools who qualified for nationals.

Georgetown women were the top women's FCS team in 4th 1 point behind New Mexico. William and Mary and Dartmouth finished 17th and 20th out of 31 teams for the only FCS schools nationals.
