But I used to live on the 600 block of N. Charles and walk every day to the Maryland Institute College of Art
I went there for a year - loved the school but got tired of being mugged and harassed on the street back then

Baltimore was VERY a different downtown back then - the Inner Harbor was basically closed off at night by police squad cars (other than 2 bars at the entrance)

1) I saw a guy get shot at
(have no idea what happened next) we ran like Hillary across the tarmac baby
2) I was in a bar one night when the cops basically raided the place (fucking nightmare)
3) Got straight up mugged walking to school more than once
4) Got my ass absolutely kicked in the middle of the day in down town Baltimore buy three guys who wanted my art folder (obviously they didn't know what is was but it looked like something worth stealing)

So after the school year ended - I left that fucking dump of a town
But now its a dramatically different place - much has changed for the better

Yes. She teaches, so 75% of the tuition was covered by her school anyway. She also was awarded a prestigious 4-year scholarship (a nice award in recognition for her previous experience and artwork), so she paid nearly nothing. Since she already had a Masters in Art Education, every lump of credits went towards maximizing her salary. She's paid well.

In addition, she has used her MFA experience and connections for other income opportunities during the year and especially the summer.

MICA was one of the top 3 MFA programs in the country and only took in 10 or so students per year (I'm sure it is still near the top, even though they expanded the program).
