I think most reasonable people agree that we did torture people and that, at times, we crossed the line and did bad things. The thing is, we knew about all of this 5 years ago at least, so what's new in this report that we didn't already know?
And the conclusion that Feinstein offers that we didn't get any information from doing this that we couldn't have gotten by other means has been contradicted many times by people on both sides of the aisle. Heck, Leon Pannetta says in his autobiography that we did get information from doing this that we couldn't have gotten otherwise. It doesn't make what we did right in terms of right or wrong, it just adds more fuel to the fire as to what we would do next time we find ourselves, as a nation, having to make the hard decisions as to what we do in times of war. Not easy questions to answer.

I am sure I'd be very upset at being water boarded and consider it very unpleasant. But if before all this stuff came up you'd have told me that I'm going to be tortured the types of things that would come to mind would be things like at that link I posted. Or maybe I might think of somebody saying something like if I don't tell them what they want they're going to chop the tip of one of my fingers off. And if I still don't tell them then they're going to chop another piece. Or something like they're going to shock my balls with an electrical chord.would love to see you act in a water boarding situation. I'm 100% positive that you would change your tune. Torture can be any method. Playing loud music, 24/7, in a small room can be torture.
Reading your posts are often times torture.
So if you then told me that by "torture" what you're talking about is what's been described as the "water boarding" that the CIA did or something like sleep deprivation I would be relieved. With the water boarding they did it in such a way as to ensure that no fluid actually got into the lungs. They did it in such a way to ensure that there would be no actual physical harm.
I'm sorry, but my view would not change if I were water boarded as described. However upset I was when it was going on I'd be damned happy when it was over that the "torture" wasn't the kind of thing I've always thought of when I think of people being tortured in order to get them to provide information.

You hadn't heard of "chinese water torture" before "waterboarding"? It's the same thing.

I don't think that it is, though I must say that what I've read about "Chinese water torture" makes me think that I would far prefer that to the kinds of things that have come to mind when I think about torture applied to extract information.Skjellyfetti wrote:You hadn't heard of "chinese water torture" before "waterboarding"? Also, I've heard about the Japanese using water boarding during World War II in a way that would end up putting water into the victim's lungs, etc. But my understanding is that the CIA took steps to make sure that did not happen...to make sure no actual physical harm was done.
Again: To me, describing things like the water boarding the CIA did and sleep deprivation as "torture" diminishes the concept of "torture" in that context. As noted: Doing just about anything that the subject finds unpleasant could be defined as "torture" in a broad sense. But when you talk about "torture" historically you're talking about some pretty bad stuff. Stuff like putting someone's head in a device that will slowly crush it and turning the screw slowly while you're interrogating them. Or stuff like putting their body in a device that will slowly drive spikes through their tissue. Stuff like applying hot irons to their genitals.
THAT'S torture.

Co-host Brian Kilmeade warned “the worst could be yet to come” because President Barack Obama’s administration had planned to release documents from the war in Afghanistan “that would not make us look like the benevolent people like we want to portray ourselves.”
“Seriously, you see what’s happening in a chocolate shop in Australia today right now — in a chocolate shop!” Hasselbeck exclaimed. “And you understand the real war with ISIS that we are in. In stark contrast with accusations [against] the CIA really just trying to do their job and keep America safe for the past 13 years.”
“It startles you,” she added.

I watched an interview with the CIA guy who was in charge of the waterboarding and interogations. He was very relucant to do it and wanted to know exactly specifics of what was legal and mentioned practicing before hand to ensure the safety of all involved. And that emergency medical staff were there and ready should something go wrong.
This guy came across, to me at least, as a regular guy, who wasn't a sick sadistic MF'er.
He said the 9-11 fellow, knew how to allow water to run into the nose and out his mouth. And held up his hand counting the seconds with his fingers.

I know. I know. At least they didn't imprison them and make them stand up for a couple days.Taliban terrorists that disguised themselves as soldiers and murdered over 130 people, mostly children, at a Pakistan school allegedly burned a teacher alive and made the students watch.
According to a NBC News report, which cited an unnamed military official, the terrorists stormed the Army Public school in Peshawar, in north-west Pakistan, and committed the horrific act as well as detonating a suicide bomb which killed a number of students.
"They burnt a teacher in front of the students in a classroom," said the unnamed military source to the US TV network.
"They literally set the teacher on fire with gasoline and made the kids watch."

No shit? Who is they?
If you wanted revenge, perhaps we should have focused on they instead of someone else.
And perhaps we could have done it without violating our own values...oops that's right, torture is defined by the Bush justice department. It can be whatever they want it to be. Regardless of how effective it is.
Even Hitler is embarrassed for us. Way to degrade 'Murica, Andrew...
