As I wrote in another thread this shows how much of a difference having even a LITTLE bit of a playoff makes. If this had been the old BCS system it probably would've been Florida State vs. Alabama in the BCS "national championship game." For SURE Alabama would've been in there. And you know Florida State probably would've been in their too because they were undefeated.

I'm glad about the Ohio State thing because I've been telling the SEC fans I live amongst for many years that Ohio State over time year in and year out has at least as much talent go through that program as anybody in the SEC does. Then they laid eggs in those two BCS championship games. Last night was better.

If you don't like Ohio State you probably better get used to being disappointed because with Meyer there their talent level's going to go up even higher and Meyer's an excellent coach. You may see something on the order of what University of Miami had down south during the 1980s before it's over with only wihtout all the criminal activity (hopefully). As I wrote in another thread when you consider that Ohio State is the only "Big 5" school so that there's no in State competition for home State talent, that Ohio State has the brand to supplement what it gets from its very talent rich home State with national recruiting, and that Meyer's presence is going to help them get nationally recruited players...the near term future doesn't look real good for Ohio State haters.

But you'll survive. I'm an Alabama hater and I got used to that kind of thing with Saban there. Alabama doesn't have the home State talent Ohio does and it's got Auburn to compete with. But that damned Saban has the rep that allows them to do things like bring traitors from Louisiana over there. Anyway once in a while you'll feel pure joy when they do get beat just like I did last night when that Ohio State back broke off that long run in the fourth quarter. Only THEN Meyer made me sweat later by throwing that pass on first down when Alabama had two timeouts so that they could save the clock.

You're probably right. But there's this in the background: My bet would be that when you look at NFL rosters five years from now there will be more players that were on the 2014/2015 Ohio State team on them than there will players from the 2014/2015 Oregon team on them. The QB from Oregon is a huge difference maker. But overall I think Ohio State has more NFL level talent and I don't think it's that close. But we'll see five years from now if we think to do it.

You're probably right. Oregon currently has 30 players on NFL rosters, Ohio State 32. I don't see any reason that OSU will widen that gap going foward.

I think the number of Oregon Players on NFL rosters is high in historical terms for that school while that for Ohio State is low. During the mid 2000s Ohio State typically had about as many or more players on NFL rosters as the top SEC schools did. In fact you may remember that prior to the LSU/Ohio State BCS title game the TV guys noted that Ohio State had more players on NFL rosters than anybody except USC at that time. They took a dip with some of the problems they've had. I expect them to resume their former position as being among the elite in terms of NFL talent production now that things are settled down and Meyer is there. They are in a State that produces a whole lot more NFL talent than Oregon does. Both schools can recruit nationally. Oregon has better access to California but Ohio State has better access to Florida. Texas is probably a wash. Not that it makes that the differences in access are anything but small in today's world.

Like I said, we'll see. But to date Oregon has never been among the elite in NFL talent production while Ohio State has and that makes sense due to the State Ohio State is located in and the fact that it's the only major school in that State. It's a situation very similar to LSU's in Louisiana. LOTS of in State talent and essentially NO in state competition for the in State cream of the crop in that regard. Oregon just flat doesn't have that. It's not that I don't think Oregon has plenty of NFL talent on its current roster. I just think it's likely that Ohio State has more. I also think it's likely that this is just the beginning in that area with Meyer there. I fully expect Ohio State to be challenging for the top spot in terms of NFL talent production again in the very near future.

To me Oregon is a "system"program and as long as they have a few key skill players to run that system they're very tough. But they are not in the class of schools like USC, Alabama, Georgia, and LSU in terms of NFL level talent production and they never have been. Ohio State HAS been in that class and I think they have way more potential to be there again than Oregon has of getting there for the first time.

Outside of a couple players, neither list strikes fear into the hearts of opposing teams, I'm sure...interesting to note, however, that Ohio State's list is heavy on interior linemen, while Oregon's is heavy on speed and skill positions.

Let's look at Oregon's NFL draft picks over five year intervals over the past 15 years:

2005 - 2009 - 30
2000 - 2004 - 39
Total: 91

NFL players who played high school football in Ohio: 72
NFL players who played high school football in Oregon: 22

Finally this one:

Now, especially considering the fact that the 22 players drafted from Ohio State during the most recent 5 year time frame is associated with a situation in which their program got into trouble including getting scholarship reductions and the fact that that's STILL a higher number of draft picks than Oregon has EVER had over any five year period, why would you NOT expect that during any given year Ohio State has more future NFL players on its roster than Oregon does?

Seriously guys. Yes I know having more future NFL players on the roster doesn't necessarily mean you're going to win. If that were the case Florida State would be in the national championship game. USC would've won the Pac 12. LSU wouldn't have lost to Notre Dame. But, c'mon. Oregon is a "system" program. It is NOT among the truly elite in terms of NFL talent production and never has been. Ohio State is simply in a MUCH better position to acquire NFL caliber football players. Oregon, on the other hand, has developed a system that allows them to compete at the very top of college football in spite of not being near the very top in its ability to acquire NFL type players.

It's pretty obvious, I think.
