Blacks and Athletics

Post by JohnStOnge »

We swerved into a discussion of Blacks and athletics in the thread on the FCS title game. In an effort not to clutter that thread too much in that thread, I posted a note to move that discussion here.

In that regard here is one article on the subject:

Most hard scientists take a different view. "If you can believe that individuals of recent African ancestry are not genetically advantaged over those of European and Asian ancestry in certain athletic endeavors," says biological anthropologist Vincent Sarich, also of Berkeley, "then you could probably be led to believe just about anything."

Maybe there really is something to what people say about "southern speed"?

Take a look at the black populations by state. More blacks in your area = more black recruits = more team speed right?

I think generally so. BTW, since the topic started in the other thread because of North Dakota State, I'll say that I went through North Dakota State's roster pictures player by player in order to count the number of Black players. 30 of the 106 players are Black. 28%.

So that's more than double the proportion in the general national population. And when you look at North Dakota and the States around it I"d say you're talking about an area where MAYBE 5% of the population is Black. I'm talking about both the States immediately adjacent to North Dakota as well as the "second ring" of States beyond that.

So North Dakota State's football team is still disproportionately Black. Very much so when you consider the location of the school. It's just that the school is in such a White area of the country that they are a lot Whiter than most college football teams.

It's not a perfect correlation but I think there is a correlation. For instance if you look at the graphic below you can see the top States in the top 15 in NFL player production rated at 2, 5, 6, 11, 3, 1, 38, 50, 17, 24, 9, 27, 15, 18, 10.

That may look kind of scattered but if you check a little you'll see that 9 of the top 15 in per capita production area also in the top 15 in percent Black population. Also #7 in per capita production, Hawaii, has Pacific Islanders. Pacific Islanders are even more likely to succeed in football than Blacks are.

The big exception is Montana. 50th in percent Black population. I'm sure they don't have a lot of Pacific Islanders either. Yet that State is 8th in per capita production as of when the data for the graphic below was collected.

I thought I saw around only 4 of 22 starters as black (was the RB #23 the only one on offense?).
