Big 10 Football Renaissance

Post by JohnStOnge »

Do you realize that the Big 10 was 3-0 vs. champions of other "Big 5" conferences during this past post season? Big 10 champ Ohio State beat SEC champ Alabama and Pac 10 champ Oregon and Big 10 #2 (tied) Michigan State beat Big 12 (tied) champ Baylor. And Baylor did beat TCU.

Pretty good year for the Big 10.

Oh sure. But I'm talking about the post season. Besides, that was the #2 or #3 team in the Big 10 playing on the road agains tthe #1 team from the Pac 12. We saw what happened when the #1 team from the Big 10 played the #1 team from the Pac 12 on a neutral site.

What I'm thinking about is how we've been through this thing where the conventional wisdom has been that the Big 10 doesn't "belong." That it's really weak. Well, it didn't have a weak performance during this post season. Especially the top 3 teams in that league with Ohio State knocking off both the SEC and Pac 12 champs, Michigan State knocking off the Big 12 champ, and Wisconsin physically handling Auburn. I think that Auburn was lucky that game was close as Wisconsin physically pushed them around but kept turning the ball over when they were driving in Auburn territory. Wisconsin rushed for 400 yards at 7.4 yards per carry and won in spite of turning the ball over 3 times to Auburn's 0. If they hadn't turned the ball over they'd have won by double digits, I think.

Those wins should never have been taken away to begin with. That whole thing was Penn State trying to repair its image as quickly as possible by sacrificing lambs regardless of whether it was really justified or not. And nothing that happened had anything to do with gaining a competitive advantage in football. The NCAA did it too. A total "political" thing.

And Penn State is still shelling out $60M to child abuse programs, so they are paying their penance for hiring a disgusting pervert.

Now that's a penalty that was valid and worthwhile. Having an issue with child abuse and trying to solve it by taking away football wins in the past never made any sense.

The B1G renaissance should be sub-titled "Because of The Ohio State". The rest of the conference was pretty much what we thought they were.
