This morning the local sports guys were talking and most of them said it would only take about $250 for somebody to pay them to not watch the game. That's pretty incredible for guys who make a living out of watching sports. I'm telling you, I think most of America is cringing at this game. I could always find somebody or something to root for, but I hate the Pats, hate the Hawks, can't stand either coach, Sherman is an ass, Lynch is a nothing, Brady is a pretty boy, Edelman is annoying...kalm wrote:89Hen wrote:I'm rooting the NFL is forced to cancel the game. I guess I don't need a rooting interest to find the NFL intriguing. Brady and Bill solidifying their legacy, a Seattle repeat, cheating, the chess match, the two best secondaries in football, Wilson's playmaking abilities, etc.89Hen wrote:This morning the local sports guys were talking and most of them said it would only take about $250 for somebody to pay them to not watch the game. This goes beyond a rooting interest. I actually dislike both teams. I-AA NC game, I had zero rooting interest, but I had no problem with either team.kalm wrote:I guess I don't need a rooting interest to find the NFL intriguing. True. But Sherman more than offsets him for me anyway.kalm wrote: And it's hard to not like Wilson.
I don't like Bellichick for Tapegate and Deflategate (plus he comes off as a complete douchebag) but it's hard to argue that any coach has done more with less over the years. He's had a top tier QB but rarely more than another couple of marquee players on the roster. I don't respect him as a person, but I do as a coach.

Agreed on Bellichick. Sherman would be everyone's favorite if he was on their team.ASUG8 wrote:True. But Sherman more than offsets him for me anyway.kalm wrote: And it's hard to not like Wilson.

Gotta pull for the Deflatriots. Nothing at all likable about Seattle or New England, and Foxboro is a heckuva lot closer.

Unless we end up at a SB party somewhere, there's a good chance I don't even bother to watch the game. Couldn't have less interest in the two teams involved.
Re: Super Bowl thread
As far as a fan base goes, not much worse right now than all the bandwagon fans that have jumped up Seattle's ass in the past couple years.
The New England fans have done this dance before (and not just in one sport) so they aren't nearly as annoying.
Neither of them is as horrid, crass and assholey as any of the NFC East fan bases though.

It's usually not much of a game anyway. I'll either host or go to someone's house for the beer, food, and commercials. If they game is good it's just gravy.SunCoastBlueHen wrote:Unless we end up at a SB party somewhere, there's a good chance I don't even bother to watch the game. JFC this. However I like this match-up because I think it will be a good game. Interested to see how each defense handles the opposing offense. How will Seattle defend Gronkowski? I'm assuming Chancellor will match up on him and that will be fun to watch.bandl wrote:As far as a fan base goes, not much worse right now than all the bandwagon fans that have jumped up Seattle's ass in the past couple years.

ESPN reaction to Brady
Mark Brunell: "I did not believe what Tom had to say. Those balls were deflated. Somebody had to do it. I don't believe there's an equipment manager in the NFL that would, on his own initiative, deflate a ball without the starting QB's approval ... That football is our livelihood. If you don't feel good about throwing that ball? Your success on the football field can suffer from that."
Jerome Bettis: "I'm so disappointed because I thought this was a perfect opportunity for Tom Brady to go and say 'You know what? I made a mistake. I blew it. It's on me. I'll take the blame here, and this will go away.' He didn't do that ... I'm disappointed in you, Tom Brady."
Brian Dawkins: "This is unbelievable. For you not to know what you touch every play? ... The equipment manager is being thrown under the bus now. Now he's the guy. Now he's the one responsible. He took it upon himself to doctor up the balls when nobody else knew about it? That hard [to believe]."

"....From that day forward, the younger Simms became something of an expert in analyzing footballs. After starting two seasons at the University of Texas, Simms played six years in the NFL, mostly as a backup. But through his stints with Tampa Bay (2004-06), Tennessee (2008 and ’10) and Denver (2009), his pregame ritual never changed.
“Before every game I ever played in the NFL, I went over to the opposing team to check out their game balls and see how the other quarterbacks liked their footballs,” Simms said. “I wanted to know how Peyton Manning liked his ball or how Brett Favre liked his. And I never, not once, felt a ball that wasn’t inflated to regulation standards. I’d thrown footballs almost every day of my life and I didn’t need a pressure gun to know what a regulation ball felt like. And doctoring balls just never happened. That’s what makes what went down last Sunday so shocking.”...."

Re: Super Bowl thread
So now Tom Brady has to recheck the psi of every ball? He has to take the snap, feel the ball to ensure it properly inflated, read the coverage, find his receivers and/or hand off the ball?
Turns out I might be a little gay. 89Hen 11/7/17

You think the equip manager or someone else just did this on his own, and Brady, who handles those balls for a living, wouldn't be able to tell they were all way under inflated?Ibanez wrote:So now Tom Brady has to recheck the psi of every ball? Wouldn't a referee, who handles those balls before and after each play, be able to tell the difference? Also, Brady has thrown approx. 143 interceptions and only one of those people, who handles balls for a living, could tell the difference?BDKJMU wrote:You think the equip manager or someone else just did this on his own, and Brady, who handles those balls for a living, wouldn't be able to tell they were all way under inflated?Ibanez wrote:So now Tom Brady has to recheck the psi of every ball? Torn between a team I can't stand (Patriots) and a team with a fanbase I absolutely despise. Plus they are like the bandwagon Miami Heat fans we had who left during the NBA finals and were caught trying to get back into the stadium

Good article in the WSJ going over the fumble rate (not lost fumbles, just total fumbles) for non-dome teams since 2010. The Pats, of course, have a statistically odd lead in all teams in terms of the lack of fumbles during that time. Likely, as was the case in spy-gate, this wasn't the first time they deflated balls.

The whole Deflategate issue makes me wonder why the NFL doesn't provide the game balls in the first place instead of each team.

Will probably go to that at some point in the future now. It normally takes someone cheating on this magnitude before some rules get changed.ASUG8 wrote:The whole Deflategate issue makes me wonder why the NFL doesn't provide the game balls in the first place instead of each team.
