Either you take me far too seriously TTBF or you don't understand the use of humor and exaggeration to highlight a problem. I don't feel put-upon by the world and I don't think I'm smug (and I try to be open minded enough to consider either possiblity) but I am concerned about the future of this country. I agree with AZ that Americans are becoming less self reliant and taking less responsibility for their actions and their consequences.

I've worked hard to get to where I am and I don't think it is greedy to want to be able to keep a decent amount of what I make to provide for my family now and in the future. I don't have a problem with paying taxes for the government to provide essential services and I consider defense, infrastructure, education, environmental protection to be essential. You and I disagree on what is fair and how the money should be spent. IMO, where the current administration appears to going off the rails is devoting too much to simply supporting people rather than focusing on teaching them how to help themselves.

There are a lot of people out there like me who have succeeded by busting their butts and if you tax them too much in order to provide services for those that have not succeeded, you take away the incentive to work hard and succeed. Take away that incentive and you will have fewer people busting their butts and fewer tax dollars to support the greater number of people who aren't succeeding. It's a delicate balancing act and one that politicians need to recognize rather than assuming there is a bottomless pool to take advantage of in order to fund efforts right society's wrongs.

If you think that my attitude is smug and put-upon, that's you're problem. ;)

Cap'n, we weren't fighting, we were disagreeing! :D

I'll admit I did take offense at being called smug and put upon but I will also stand behind the points I made in my post (which I ended with a wink since there is no peace smilie). I might not always agree with TTBF but I do have tremendous respect for him.

And don't ever compare me to Mr. T again.

guess a good-natured barb found a nerve.

look, it's been my experience that there are whole lotta middle-aged white guys who have forgotten how much help they've been given to get where they got, and many of them now espouse pulling up the ladder now that they've got theirs.

if you went to public school, you've suckled the teat of government as a conk might say
if you went to a public university... your tuition was subsidized by somewhere between 35 and 70%
if the company you work for has a government contract... well, you get the idea.

i understand frustration with welfare fraud... but it's such a tiny percentage of spending (and even of wasteful spending) that the anger over it seems overblown and misplaced... it's not ideal, and reforms have worked to cut a lot of the abuse, and yes there should be vigilance... but the notion that more than a few cents of your tax dollars are paying for welfare fraud is completely false.

It's not frustration with WELFARE fraud, TTBF. If it was just that, I could live with it. It's the overall notion of government in general (now apparently the left AND the right) that they can spend, spend, spend in complete oblivion to the long term consequences. And the belief (mostly from the left, but in certain areas the right as well) that MORE government is BETTER government. It's not things like welfare FRAUD that I don't like, it's the concept of the welfare STATE that we're rapidly becoming.

There's a big difference.

Am I a conk?
- I've been a registered voter since 1984.
- Have never been registered as a Republican
- Registered as a Democrat for the 1988 Iowa Caucus because you had to be a registered member of a party to participate, I wanted to experience the process (as a Poly Sci major) and the Democratic race was a lot more interesting than that Republican (Dukakis, Gephardt, Babbitt, etc. vs. Bush, Dole, Kemp & DuPont).
- Have voted for Republicans & Democrats depending on who I think will do the best job.
- Support funding for education, protecting the environment, gay rights (including marriage)

Does simply being a fiscal conservative and expecting the government to manage its checkbook the way I have to manage mine make me a conk? And if it does, is that a bad thing?
Being wrong about a topic is called post partisanism - kalm

MAQA - putting the Q into qrazy qanon qult qonspiracy theories since 2015.

It will probably be difficult for MAQA yahoos to overcome the Qult programming but they should give being rational & reasonable a try.

look, it's been my experience that there are whole lotta middle-aged white guys who have forgotten how much help they've been given to get where they got, and many of them now espouse pulling up the ladder now that they've got theirs.

if you went to public school, you've suckled the teat of government as a conk might say
if you went to a public university... your tuition was subsidized by somewhere between 35 and 70%
if the company you work for has a government contract... well, you get the idea.

i understand frustration with welfare fraud... but it's such a tiny percentage of spending (and even of wasteful spending) that the anger over it seems overblown and misplaced... it's not ideal, and reforms have worked to cut a lot of the abuse, and yes there should be vigilance... but the notion that more than a few cents of your tax dollars are paying for welfare fraud is completely false.
TTBF, I answer to your first two questions is yes but I don't think I've forgotten or that I'm being hypocritical. I have no problem with the government helping put people in a position where they have an opportunity to succeed. I am for government funding of education, childcare assistance for single parents, etc. This isn't a handout; it's giving people the knowledge to take advantage of life's opportunities. After that it should be up to the individual to take advantage of that opportunity. I believe that America should be the land of opportunity (I think that might make me a true progressive).

MAQA - putting the Q into qrazy qanon qult qonspiracy theories since 2015.

It will probably be difficult for MAQA yahoos to overcome the Qult programming but they should give being rational & reasonable a try.
