Your rights are gone!!!
The constitution no longer has any meaning what-so-ever!!!
Wisconsin police can attach GPS to cars to secretly track someone's movements without obtaining search warrants, an appeals court ruled Thursday.
However, the District 4 Court of Appeals said it was "more than a little troubled" by that conclusion and asked Wisconsin lawmakers to regulate GPS use to protect against abuse by police and private individuals.
As the law currently stands, the court said police can mount GPS on cars to track people without violating their constitutional rights — even if the drivers aren't suspects.

*shrug*
following/tracking a car is not a "search".
it's not really all that different than having an unmarked car tail a vehicle.
'tis just cheaper.

Cap'n Cat's take?
Read about this today online. I'm a deep, dark, don't-tread-on-me borderline Libertarian when it comes to cops and gov't "interference", but I don't find this to be unnecessarily intrusive. I don't like the police, but I respect them and the fact that they have a tough, tough job trying to execute their tasks.

all well and good... but, much like wiretapping, getting a warrant is easy... just fing respect rights... it's not onerous on the cops to do their jobs.Cap'n Cat wrote:Cap'n Cat's take?

OK. I look at it, as well, as nothing more than some societal institution utilizing available technology, as a major corporation would to better facilitate production.

Re: Your rights are gone!!!
Ths seems very troublesome. On the other hand, what is to stop the police from following you day to day anyway. They don't need a warrant to park in front of your house and follow you to work. All this does is let them do it electronically. I don't like the fact that they are physically attaching something to your vehicle. I'm curious to see how the courts ultimately rule on this.

Where does it stop? Having the govt attach a GPS thing to your cars computer and if you go faster than the posted speed limit on a given roadway you get a ticket in the mail? I am sure the Cap'n is ok with that.BlueHen86 wrote:Ths seems very troublesome. On the other hand, what is to stop the police from following you day to day anyway. Re: Your rights are gone!!!
the difference is substantial - the cops are going spend resources to stake out a person like that... they have a reason to do so... and while gps could be used that way... the margin for abuse is huge. the simple act of getting a warrant, getting a judge to deem it a credible use of what amounts to a phone tap seems a reasonable burden to place on law enforcement.BlueHen86 wrote:Ths seems very troublesome. That is a good question. I hope it never happens, I'd love to hear the constitutional argument against it.grizzaholic wrote:Where does it stop? On a side note: I'm waiting for the police to start using EZ-Pass to give tickets. EZ-pass knows when I get on and off the PA Turnpike, if I traveled 100 miles in 1 hour EZ-pass could know that too.

Re: Your rights are gone!!!
Sad thing that it is, is that the govt/cops will do anything, and I mean ANYTHING, to get a few more dollars from us regular folk all the while saying that they wished there were no speeders, no vandalism, no parking violations, no tickets what-so-ever.BlueHen86 wrote:That is a good question.
