And, I just did a google street view around Buzzard Point and it doesn't look seedy. Empty... but, not seedy.

First, you are using google maps. I am using my car. We have a hockey game at Patterson Park in a couple weeks. All aroud the park one block will be renovated, the next block devastated. Ask Andy if you like.
Second, I never said Buzzard Point was seedy (you assumed), I said "nobody has been to that part of DC." meaning it was empty. It's empty for a reason, there is nothing there other than Fort McNair. They're not going to all of a sudden open new restaurants and shops for 23 United games a year. This stadium needed to go somewhere easy to get to and where there are other things already in place.
Way to play the race card moron.

Inner Harbor is not "a couple blocks" away from any slums or projects. It's just not.
And Patterson Park is about a couple of MILES from Inner Harbor.

You just don't like the fact that you have to switch lines and get on to the green line to get to Nats Park. Nats Park is basically right off the metro.89Hen wrote:It was somewhat of a rhetorical question as nobody has been to that part of DC. I honestly think you are trying to be contrary for the sake of something to do this morning. Go east of about Central Ave in B'more and tell me how nice it is. I didn't say PP was a couple blocks from the IH, I said there are streets that are nice and the next street will be a dump... i.e. falling off a cliff.Skjellyfetti wrote:I wasn't using google maps for Baltimore - I also know Baltimore pretty well.89Hen wrote: First, you are using google maps. Re: US SOCCER
Looks like Qatar - 2022 World Cup will be in November/December instead of June/July
It's a long ways off but wonder if MLS will end season 1 - 1/2 months earlier than normal (MLS Cup for past 3 years has been first week in December) - before that was in November. Bigger effect on the European/South American leagues who are just starting their seasons in August/September and that doesn't even include the Champions League and other club cups that go on in the season
Call ups for national teams will likely start in October which could get top guys out for a lot of games or delay a lot of games. For example, Man City from October 25 through December 13 had 8 Premier League Games, 3 Champions League Games and 1 Capital One Cup game. Can't see those leagues liking this interruption where the majority of the players will come out of those leagues.

Re: US SOCCER
From what was said on the radio there is only 1 Euro league that will actually be affected. Don't most leagues have an international break around that time anyway?
Who knows, maybe by 2022 the MLS will be on FIFA scheduling - really pigeon holes where teams can be though and puts teams like DC, Chicago, Philly, etc... in a bind.

Re: US SOCCER
Just looked around and read that they'll try to reduce the impact (except for 1 league) by cutting back on international dates. Not sure if they are talking of only the World Cup time that won't be affected because we know that national teams usually call up players 1 month or so before the WC begins so you have to take that time into account as well.
You are right that it seems impossible to get MLS lined up with the others due to weather reasons. Could you imagine the Revolution being able to host a game any time over the last month or so?

The impact, though, isn't just the length of the World Cup itself. You have to look at the preparation from the training camps that come before it (normally they happen a month before the Cup itself) and then the rest period a lot of these guys take after the World Cup. Heck, you didn't see some guys play full time until deep into September after the Brazil World Cup, how would clubs like that if they're guys were out for a month after the World Cup? No matter what FIFA does, the decision to go with Qatar will continue to be a debacle.tribe_pride wrote:Just looked around and read that they'll try to reduce the impact (except for 1 league) by cutting back on international dates. Yeah, there's definitley going to be some club big wigs upset over this. I wonder if they'll go so far as to put clauses in the contracts of WC-caliber players that they aren't allowed to participate.GannonFan wrote:The impact, though, isn't just the length of the World Cup itself. Re: US SOCCER
That's why I started the timeline back in October (though didn't account for the post-World Cup aspect). If it was just the 3-4 weeks of WC with some teams only getting 3 games, it's not as big of a deal. But as we both said, the training camp starts a month before so it would go into October and the world cup would go until almost New Years which hurts the season as a whole.GannonFan wrote:The impact, though, isn't just the length of the World Cup itself. Strong play recently by the US men.
First a 4-3 win in the Netherlands last week and then a 2-1 win today @ #1 Germany. Both friendlies with sides using B teams but those were 2 firsts for the good guys so hopefully we can build on these wins.

It cannot be undersold. The Netherlands and Germany are preparing for Euro. They had several big names from the World Cup. It was on their home soil. They both took the lead.

Re: US SOCCER
Agreed. That wasn't a "B" team out there for Germany, there were plenty of top line players - Schweinsteiger, Khedira, Schurlle, Goetz, Podolski - heck, Ozil even played the whole 90 minutes. Winning there, coming from behind, when Germany is building up to play a Euro qualifier in a few days - that's a big win. They are the reigning world champs and the #1 team in the world.MSUDuo wrote:It cannot be undersold. The Netherlands and Germany are preparing for Euro. They had several big names from the World Cup. Re: US SOCCER
Gold Cup moving on to the Semifinals.
US dominated a bad Cuban team 6-0. Hopefully turning it on at the right time this tourney
US will play Jamaica who edged out Haiti 1-0
Panama beat Trinidad in the 9th round of penalties to advance
They will play Mexico who needed the refs help to let them move on over Costa Rica. CR got called for a penalty inside the box in the 120+ minute on a clear nonfoul that led to the lone goal of the game.
If we win this tourney, we advance to the Confederations Cup in 2 years in Russia. If we lose, we play winner in a playoff to get to the Confederations Cup since we won Gold Cup 2 years ago.

US plays well early... then quickly falls apart and Jamaica jumps out to 2-0 lead.

USA played a good first 10-15 minutes of the 2nd half then ran out of gas. They missed like 5 solid opportunities for a goal.
Been watching a lot of the Gold Cup. USA never impressed me. This program has regressed since the 2010 WC.
On a separate note, it is amazing at how many calls Mexico has gotten this whole tournament. The last game against CR and now against Panama are just down right sickening. They clearly made their FIFA bribery payment on time.

Disagree on regressing with some of the results we have gotten. But I do think it's time to end the Klinsmann experiment. This team continues to baffles me.

US fans definitely get too excited about friendlies, though.
Not that long ago a lot of people were psyched about beating Germany in a friendly. Now, here we are: knocked out of the Gold Cup in the semifinals by Jamaica.
Friendlies don't mean anything. exhibit B: The New York Red Bulls beat Chelsea 4-2 tonight.

Re: US SOCCER
The 2010 WC seemed less talented than the 2014 WC team, but the 2010 team played better as a group…they were a team. The 2014 WC team and this Gold Cup team just never seemed to get on the same page and at times just looked downright awful. So now USA soccer is back to square one trying to figure it out for the next WC. IMO we went from “maybe we can get past the first knockout round” to “will we even qualify?”
And agree with Jelly. No one should put stock in friendlies; it’s like getting excited about your NFL team going 4-0 in preseason.
