NAU Coach Jack Murphy Suspended…

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

…though it may be a while before it takes effect.

He'll either miss their first postseason game if they get one (presumably CIT) or he'll be out for their next Big Sky Tournament game.

NAU is playing at GCU in the CIT. Wonder if they sit him then or wait until next year...BTW can a BSC suspension be held against NAU for a non BSC sponsored tournament?

Woo hoo!!!

I'd have to bet that Murphy serves the suspension in this game as opposed to the conference tournament in the future.

NAU played GCU last season and my understanding is there was supposed to be a return game to GCU this year but it didn't materialize?

This has an interesting twist to it as NAU's old point guard, Dewayne Russell, is now the starting guard @ GCU and seemed to have left NAU under some odd circumstances (i.e. leaving NAU the day before the conference regular season began last year).

In relation to what? The suspension itself? SD's comments? MTJack's comments?

Given what I saw of the replay, the NAU coach definitely had a beef. The BSC's "explanation" was specious in the extreme. The member of the UM crew on the floor before the buzzer should have been T'd up. Not sure that would have been enough for NAU to win, but they certainly deserved the chance to try. I get SD's comments in another thread that the NAU coach should have held himself to a higher standard, but he DEFINITELY had a legit beef....

How did Murphy have a legitimate beef with DeCuire? :?

I don’t have an issue with the suspension, but this whole situation was mishandled to begin with. Obviously this stemmed from the missed T, but how does Foolerton immediately absolve one coach and condemn another via a statement not long after the altercation?

http://www.bigskybball.com/2015/03/big- ... ntana.html

Foolerton should have taken his time to review the situation before making a statement. No question Murphy started it and he needs to keep a cool head (yeah yeah easier said than done)…but as a HC DeCuire also has that responsibility. DeCuire jumped right back in Murphy’s face which escalated the whole ordeal. Fortunately none of the players did anything stupid or this could have been a whole lot worse.

To make a horrible AZ-like analogy, I compare this to an offsetting personal foul penalty in FB where two players get into a little tiff on the field. Both players usually get the flag (or no flag), so why not hand out matching suspensions in this situation (or no suspensions since “there are no punches thrown”)?

If you're going this route you also have to acknowledge there has been a major push to not do the "offsetting" fouls anymore. The NCAA and NFL has put a major emphasis on only penalizing the one who started the incident unless things get really extreme.

That may be the case in instances like this as well. Though I do admit to not really being privy on anything in this situation

Honestly it's amazing that DeCuire didn't get flagged. Usually it's the guy who reacts that gets the call against him....plus, with him being...well...I don't think I need to spell it out for you...

Bottom line: Murphy is a fucking puss who let his emotions get the best of him. Zero class---along with the rest of the NAU program...so they're a good fit.

All this NAU butthurt about a correct call.

Not surprised. :coffee:

LOL at the self-righteous Montana dickwads. The same ones crying about calls in every game they lose. (according to most Griz fans, no Big Sky team has ever legit beat the Griz - always the refs, or the administration, or the sun's fault).

And no, the call was not correct - the Big Sky is just CYA on this.

If this had happened to Montana, the thread on eGriz would be 100 pages by now.

Actually, most Griz fans bitch about the poor free-throw shooting....or going into a prevent offense with 6 minutes left in the game....those two things accounted for 98% of the losses by the basketball team this year.

dback -

Grand Canyon U announced that they're offering up free tickets for the CIT game vs. NAU on Wednesday night. :suspicious: There's gotta be a catch, though. I can maybe see giving free tickets to season ticket holders but not to opposing fans.

I emailed NAU's Director of Ticket Operations and she said that NAU is in section 115 and to go to GCU's website for details. I don't know....it does indeed look like they are being offered for free. Craziness!

Re: U of M fans being pissy that NAU fans are pissy. Differing opinions obviously aren't allowed. I like egriz's hoops fan forum. Some good conversation going on over there.

Please, do spell it out, AZ.

Murphy is a fiery hothead and it seems Decuire is as well. Murphy's emotions got the best of him but Decuire didn't walk away from a comment like he could have either. He kept the situation going and threw gasoline on an already smoldering fire. (He's probably pretty smart to do this as it certainly fired the home crowd up and Dahlberg was rocking the next time til the final 5 minutes.) Murphy and Decuire seem to be two peas in a pod. Young and intense and ready to take on the world. Just the kinds of coaches this league needs.

That being said....Murphy deserved punishment but for him never actually physically contacting the opposing coach or swearing....being removed for a playoff game seems a bit harsh. But so be it. It's over and done and from what I've heard the Griz, Bobcat and Wildcat fans bitch about Fullerton in the past, I'm sure that an appeals process is to no avail.

Re: your zero class comment....the only player that I saw that needed to be physically restrained was Jordan Gregory. It seems that NAU's players showed quite a bit of decorum, according to the video. You can say my comparison is apples vs. oranges if you like but that Bobby Hauck guy who was worshipped in Missoula certainly wasn't a model of restraint, calm and good will towards other programs and coaches, was he? Leading FTC chants....flipping off MSU fans....being generally irascible towards the media.....sounds like the definition of class to me. Was that okay? Should be have been reprimanded by the league? Thoughts?

Anyway, I don't think the non-technical was the wrong decision. The refs said the ball wasn't live, so Edmonds being on the court wasn't a foul—the ball had already gone through the hoop, the clock was stopped, and the refs blew the whistle so they could review the time. NAU could've inbounded it… but since they didn't have a chance to, Edmonds's transgressions didn't affect play (and NAU shouldn't have even tried to inbound it; their best chance was to hope the refs put more time on the clock anyway). This doesn't seem that much different than when fans rush the court prematurely—there's almost never a technical called there, either.

Edmonds & the Griz were lucky they got off on a technicality, but they legitimately got off on a technicality.

Are you really that dense today, Venus? DeCuire is responsible for the behavior of his bench staff, one of whom touched off the whole thing by being the sixth Griz on the court while the ball was in play. That's against the rules, and everyone knows it.

The guy who jumped on the court was an ineligible player, not a member of the coaching staff. And, either way, that doesn't really excuse Murphy's behavior… does it?

"Bench staff" > "Coaching staff". The HC is responsible for EVERYONE out there on the bench, even an ineligible player who lost his head thinking the game was already over.

No, Murphy's behavior isn't excused. There's a difference between having a legit beef (which he did) and how one reacts to it.

Bottom line: DeCuire should be suspended for allowing it to happen, and Murphy should be suspended for his blow-up. The PROPER response would have been to submit a protest of the officials' CLEAR misapplication of a rule.
