A North Charleston police officer was arrested on a murder charge and the FBI opened a civil rights investigation Tuesday after video surfaced of the lawman shooting eight times at 50-year-old Walter Scott as he ran away.

Scott died Saturday after Patrolman 1st Class Michael Slager, 33, shot him in the back.

The video footage, which The Post and Courier obtained Tuesday from a source who asked to remain anonymous, shows the end of the confrontation between the two on Saturday after Scott ran from a traffic stop. It was the first piece of evidence contradicting a statement that Slager released earlier this week through his attorney.

I think that under current law the policeman is toast. I will say, though, that I personally believe that the law should be such that if you try to run from the police they should be able to shoot you in order to stop you. I don't agree with the standard that they can only shoot you if their life is in danger or someone else's life is in danger.

I do think cops are over aggressive in many cases and use excessive force fairly routinely. Nevertheless, when it comes to it, I have always believed that if the police are trying to get you and you flee they should be able to shoot you in order to stop you. If you don't want to get shot, don't flee.

Cop reaches for his gun and shoots the guy running away. Mind you, the guy already ran away once...the cop apparently caught up, and that's where the struggle, the beginning of which is not caught on tape, starts.

The video is damning. SLED is also pretty good about investigating officer involved shootings, and so even if the vid didn't exist this guy would be toast- if for no other reason than the bullet placement and the range at which he was shot.

But from the vid it is obvious that the guy isn't a threat, and the fleeing felon rule won't apply here.. The best this guy can do is plead guilty for a deal.
