Re: Bowe Bergdahl...
Traitors these days are never executed, simple fact. I also don't believe that any American has been executed since the adoption of the Constitution. Even the Rosenberg's weren't executed for Treason. It was for Espionage. But if we are going to start then this POS should be the first to get a bullet to the melon...

Re: Bowe Bergdahl...
Sorry, desertion wise we haven't executed anybody since WWII. Over 21,000 American soldiers were given varying sentences for desertion during World War II, including 49 death sentences, Eddie Slovik's was the only death sentence that was actually carried out. The execution by firing squad was carried out at 10:04 a.m. on 31 January 1945, near the village of Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines.CID1990 wrote:Wait wutpolsongrizz wrote: I also don't believe that any American has been executed since the adoption of the Constitution.

Re: Bowe Bergdahl...
Does that number capture summary executions though? The reason I ask is because there are lots of stories of NCOs or officer shooting soldiers summarily for either desertion in the face of the enemy (that's fancy talk for running away) or disobeying a direct order, or mutiny. It was rare for sure, although if you go back further in time (like the CIvil War) it was common. NCOs were known as "stoppers" or "plugs" because that was what they would do to holes in the line, and if you ran they could shoot you (although they usually just put a boot in your ass)polsongrizz wrote:Sorry, desertion wise we haven't executed anybody since WWII. I tried to find some credible info on that end of the spectrum. There is only conjecture obviously. I know it happened more in the past than it does now. Not because we don't want to but because it is just harder to get away with summarily executing someone these days.CID1990 wrote:Does that number capture summary executions though? I would guess that even those that were for the most part ended up being listed as KIA.

Re: Bowe Bergdahl...
I think you need to consider the role of conscripts. All volunteers today so I wouldn't be surprised to find that it does occur less frequently. Also wouldn't be surprised to find that it would be easier to do these days for the same reason. If, and I haven't heard anyone in the military say it in so many words, yet, those six troops died in missions that were specifically hunts for Bergdahl, as opposed to regular line of duty patrols, then I believe the Army should shoot him if he is found to have deserted.polsongrizz wrote:I tried to find some credible info on that end of the spectrum. I think its pretty obvious that summary executions would not fly today. It is also fairly certain that the provisions for the death penalty in the UCMJ are pretty vestigial at this point.

There has never been an "official" change, but Im pretty sure that by the time Vietnam rolled around a Sergeant shooting a private fir refusing an officer's order or for desertion wasnt going to fly.houndawg wrote:When did they change?CID1990 wrote:I think its pretty obvious that summary executions would not fly today. Re: Bowe Bergdahl...
So now it comes out that the Army knew Bergdahl was trying to "go over to the other side" and into Russia.
So Obama brings him back with great fanfare, says he served honorable and distinctly, smears the rest of his surviving platoon, and ... Why?

In fact, by the time Obama took office, according to a report from the office of the director of National Intelligence last year, the Bush-Cheney administration had released 171 detainees, either confirmed or suspected of having returned to the battlefield.
These include, according to the Defense Intelligence Agency, Ibrahim Sen, who was later arrested in Turkey charged as the leader of an active al Qaeda cell, and Abdullah Mahsud, whom Pakistan government officials accuse of directing a suicide attack in April 2007 that killed 31 people.
Under the Obama administration, which claims to have a more thorough vetting process for releasing detainees, seven were confirmed or suspected of having returned to the battle as of last September.

However, I find a couple things interesting
1) You have cone around and now think that Gitmo is necessary and we should still be holding people there
2) that Benghazi WAS a planned operation
welcome aboard!
Do we ever indefinitely hold POW's? Should there be a time limit? If not, should we not, as a civilized nation, try them in a court of law?
Never denied Benghazi wasn't planned. Just don't believe there was a huge cover-up, or that it was Hillary's fault. Sometimes, shit happens. Happened a lot under Bush.
