RIP Calvin Peete

Post by dbackjon »

Dal - you heard of him?

Calvin Peete, the most successful black player on the PGA Tour before the arrival of Tiger Woods, died Wednesday morning. He was 71.

The PGA Tour did not have a cause of death. Murray Brothers Funeral Home confirmed it was handling the arrangement but did not release additional information.

Peete won 12 times on the PGA Tour and was the most accurate driver of his generation. He led the tour in driving accuracy every year from 1981 to 1990. Peete's biggest year was in 1982 when he won four times. He won the Vardon Trophy for the lowest scoring average in 1984 by edging Jack Nicklaus.

 Really amazing what he did given his physical challenges, but his swing really wasn't that strange. Loved me some Cal Peete back in the day. Great article from his heyday...

One of 19 children in his family--his father had married twice--Calvin Peete left school after the eighth grade in Pahokee, Fla., to help his family through difficult financial times.

He couldn't do heavy or rough work because of a bent left arm that would never straighten. He had fallen out of a tree at age 12 and broken his elbow in three parts. The doctor said that if he broke it again, the arm might have to be amputated.

One of my all time favorites. IIRC he picked golf up late and was self taught using a copy of the 5 Modern Fundamentals and a nearby park.

Exhibit A against the age old fundamental that a golfer must keep his left arm straight.

RIP Calvin.
