And in the Falcons case, pumping in fake crowd noise for two years, the guy involved was fired, the guy who was in charge who didn't know got suspended for three months, the team got fined $350k, and they lost a draft pick. And that didn't involve a guy on the field, a QB, directly cheating like in this case.Chizzang wrote:I understand all of thatGannonFan wrote:
Through your apologist eyes I'm sure that's how you read that. Even throwing in there the whole 1 lb psi in a ball to further minimize the cheating. Nice. Are you getting any signed memorabilia from Tom Brady too or are you holding out for something else?
No, the actual point I was making when comparing the two was that Sean Payton, who had no knowledge of what was going on, was suspended. That was comparing to Robert Kraft, who despite no actual wrong doing, could also face some kind of penalty. If you like, the same comparison of "someone being punished who didn't directly do anything wrong" could be applied to the Falcons Owner (or President, can't remember) who just got suspended because his team, unbenknownst to him, pumped artificial crowd noise into the stadium. The concept being compared, i.e. punishing someone at the top of an organization who did nothing wrong while those below him did do wrong, is very comparable.
but the type of crime is important regardless of knowledge or lack of knowledge
I think the whole thing is fascinating
The way the NFL responds to this will say a lot

Yeah, but the Falcons owner wasn't best buds with Goodell, as far as I know.GannonFan wrote:And in the Falcons case, pumping in fake crowd noise for two years, the guy involved was fired, the guy who was in charge who didn't know got suspended for three months, the team got fined $350k, and they lost a draft pick. With a report full of "probably" and "more likely than not" it seems it will be hard to give them the max unless some definite yesses pop up. I'm pretty indifferent in my liking the Patriots as a team, but I don't know why these guys would jeopardize their careers when they have the talent to win it without cheating. I also wonder why this didn't come up until the SB - is it an ongoing problem? I heard Michael Strahan say that even though he wasn't a ball handler on the field he'd be able to tell if a ball wasn't properly inflated.

Speculation swirling that Brady will be suspended for the 1st 4 games. If it's true that's light IMHO.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

The NFL is actually almost more interesting without Brady
The other AFC East teams have a shot at winning some games
You gotta admit the Patriots without Brady make things pretty damn fascinating

The National Football League suspended New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady for four regular season games without pay "for conduct detrimental to the integrity of the NFL," the league announced Monday afternoon.
The league also announced that the team—which won the Super Bowl earlier this year—would be fined $1 million and forced to forfeit its first-round pick in the 2016 draft and its fourth-round selection in the 2017 draft.

Robert Kraft net worth: $4,300,000,000
Fine: $1,000,000, or 0.02% of his net worth
So let's say you made a million dollars selling drugs and then got busted. If you got the Robert Kraft treatment, your 0.02% fine would be $232.56. You get to keep the rest.

I am no Pats fan (not close to it) but I think this is pretty over the top. How is this any different than a WR stickying up their hands illegally, a pitcher throwing spit balls, batters corking their bats, or the like. None of them get severely harsh penalties like this one. I get they want to say no more of this and give a harsher penalty than normal but this is a lot for something which I read is not common but not exactly rare either.

The franchise has cheated to win every single one of its superbowls. Maybe that has something to do with it?tribe_pride wrote:I am no Pats fan (not close to it) but I think this is pretty over the top. The news this morning said that this is roughly the same punishment for getting caught taking PEDs. I don't think it sticks 100% in the end after appeals.

Oh the irony
but I think 4 games is about right - it has a significant sting to it
and the FIRST ROUND DRAFT pick is HUGE
