The Berkeley County sheriff’s deputy who was shot and wounded by a masked gunman late Thursday, has been taken off a ventilator and is talking and recognizing family members, a county spokesman said Saturday.

Agents from the State Law Enforcement Division, as well as SWAT members from the Charleston Police Department and hostage negotiators are on the scene. The operation started about 4 a.m.

Authorities believe the person responsible for the shooting last week of Berkeley County sheriff’s Lt. Will Rogers. Rogers was shot multiple times about 10:30 p.m. Thursday by a masked man outside the Exxon gas station at U.S. Highway 52 and Cypress Gardens Road near Moncks Corner. He remains in critical condition at Medical University Hospital.

Now, blacklivesmatter, said they were going to go down and video tape this to make sure this choir boy, who tried to murder a cop, doesn't get roughed up.

The indictments came after prosecutors presented evidence to a grand jury for two weeks, Baltimore City State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby said.

Gray's death last month after allegedly suffering a devastating spinal injury while in police custody sparked protests and riots in Baltimore.

The six officers face charges that, if they are convicted, could lead to decades in prison, based on their alleged actions that day. Among them: Illegal arrest, misconduct, assault and involuntary manslaughter.

Officer Caesar R. Goodson Jr., who prosecutors say was driving the van used to transport Gray after his arrest, faces the most charges, and the most severe: second-degree depraved heart murder.

Batts said. “There are people, and they’ve said this to me, `If I get out of my car and make a stop for a reasonable suspicion that leads to probable cause but I make a mistake on it, will I be arrested?’ They pull up to a scene and another officer has done something that they don’t know, it may be illegal, will they be arrested for it? Those are things they are asking.”

The Baltimore Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 3 on Thursday posted a statement from President Gene Ryan on social media saying that the police are “under siege.”

“The criminals are taking advantage of the situation in Baltimore since the unrest,” Ryan wrote. “(Police) are more afraid of going to jail for doing their jobs properly than they are of getting shot on duty.”
