I admire and respect John McCain for his military service and much of his political service, but I was not a great fan of McCain on his own merits as a Presidential candidate.

Had he managed to win, I think he would have kept his word on spending and vetoed some spending bills.

It is easy in hindsight to acknowledge the overreaching of the neocons. However, the hatred for neocons currently in fashion is overblown and a little hysterical.
