I wonder why in Southeast Asia there are about 10-15 airlines flying regionally- all competing with each other on duplicate routes - you can fly anywhere in mainland or maritime Southeast Asia for less than 200 bucks

the customer service is excellent

the stewardesses are hot

the food is good

the planes leave on time

so obviously the free market is working in what is a very unregulated free market over there

It costs LESS to skip maintenance tests

and now 48 people are dead - but the airline did save money





TransAsia had a cash 12 month earlier - same model aircraft
same issue - ZERO Mechanical maintenance

In flight failure

that certainly has to be a factor in their costs

but I never saw TransAsia- rather, I saw Royal Thai and Singapore - very reputable airlines with records commensurate with US carriers- charging 150 bucks for international flights that would cost you 600 bucks on United AND you get a pissy 55 year old stewardess who hates your guts and passive aggressively lets you know it-

maintenance costs dont come close to explaining the difference

I stand in line at the airline kiosks every week
I stand in line at the TSA security check points almost daily
I stand in line at the car rental facility mondays and fridays

I live in a series of lines
A business traveler doesn't really care about cancelled flights and delays
A business traveler is used to not getting where they are trying to go
being a day late
paying through the ass for a new ticket on a different airline that same day in a different terminal
with two extra stops for $1500.00 to arrive after midnight
so he can be at a meeting at 8:45 am
that ends up getting cancelled because somebody else from somewhere else couldn't make it


This guy - and his daughter - are just typical whiny consumer passengers
thinking the entire industry should revolve around their $119 discount ticket

So it's too much to expect that they actually fly where they say they're going to fly, when they say they're going to fly there? It'd be one thing if it were a one-off....but it's not. Happens with frightening regularity.

In fact, the last five times either me or a member of my extended family has flown (in just the past 3 months) one or more of the legs of the flights have been seriously delayed or outright canceled due to "maintenance". So, either a) they have hired some really shitty mechanics; b) they're too worried about their bottom line to replace aging airframes, or c) they are cancelling partially full flights to ensure every flight that DOES take off does so with a full load of people....so no, I don't think I was the only one pissed off that that flight was canceled at the last minute...
