They will be at a pussy EC course.
And, you won't be able to watch it in prime time.

Everyone should be talking about Spieth going for the slam, not about a golf course the country club set snubs their nose at.

Re: US Open
Next Year's US Open will be at Oakmont. It was last played there in 2007 and won by Angel Cabrera with a score of +5, 1 stroke ahead of Tiger and Furyk at +6, 2 ahead of Niclas Fasth at +7 and 4 ahead of Toms and B. Watson at +9. Nobody else better than +9.
Only 8 rounds under par for the whole tourney, 2 by Cabrera. Ouch.

I don't know if there are any left, but 1 of the 4 courses within 20 miles of my house was sand greens. It has since switched to grass. I preferred the grass greens course 2 miles from my house, that was in Canada, the real frozen tundra.89Hen wrote:You probably still have those in the frozen tundra.Gil Dobie wrote:

Bent is better than poa in general, but poa greens can be amazingly good in the right climate/and or right time of year. Case in point would be Pebble. Spokane CC and Moses Lake CC have all poa greens which are typically lightning quick and smooth. Poa does however tend to be a little grainy (like EC(b) Bermuda and therefore still not as consistent as bent. Poa also does terrible with temperature extremes, showing high rates of die off during unusually cold winters and becoming stressed and sunken in high heat/drought-like conditions (See Chambers Bay and the hottest June ever on the Puget Sound).CAA Flagship wrote:Green bent grass >>>>>Green poa89Hen wrote:

All new western courses are seeded with bent but poa is so pervasive it eventually takes over most of them after a few decades. So yes, Flaggy it's a pest out here too.
I will still respectfully disagree with brother 89. I though it was a great tournament and when someone birdies 6 out of the last 7 on the last 9 of the US Open, and a few of the greatest players in the world were still at the top, I'd still say it was a fair challenge.

Re: US Open
No one is really against poa, it's been around forever on tons of different courses like you say. The difference here was the condition of it at Chambers Bay. I'm sure the weather played it's part, but there's no denying the greens were crap for much of the tournament. That's the real complaint. The rest of the course played great like all US Open courses do. Just fix the greens so they don't play like loose asphalt. Not too much to ask.kalm wrote:Bent is better than poa in general, but poa greens can be amazingly good in the right climate/and or right time of year. Case in point would be Pebble. The only thing for me was to watch a guy blister a drive down the middle of the fairway and watch it drain off into a trap. Great players like Speith compensate and overcome it, but it was generally harder to watch than other tourneys because of that.GannonFan wrote:No one is really against poa, it's been around forever on tons of different courses like you say. FWIW, Pebble's greens have been crappy for an Open or two as well. Perhaps not on this level though.

Hey Kalm. What was up with the course and the greens? I was thinking it was due to our unusually dry spring, as my back yard looks like it is full blown August right now, but others were saying that water was held back.kalm wrote:Bent is better than poa in general, but poa greens can be amazingly good in the right climate/and or right time of year. I get the water reduction to change the way the greens play, but you can't tell me that if we would have had our typical weather, that course would not have looked greener, even with a sprinkler system.

With the way the greens were this past weekend, you might start out at the middle of the hole but the green is so bumpy, you still wouldn't make it.SeattleGriz wrote:I could sink that putt!dbackjon wrote:Meh, could have been in worse shape...

See, it went beyond that for me. As I mentioned earlier, I don't have a problem with a ball "rolling out", but this wasn't the case here. As the fourth round headed for its conclusion on the scorched earth, Chambers Bay had been exposed as a costly fairground ride; next month's Open at the home of golf will be the real thing.

Re: US Open
Since Davis is a Georgia Southern grad, I've kept up with his career at the USGA somewhat, and I have to say that he has done an outstanding job putting on all of the USGA events over the past dozen years or so. Shitty course conditions aside, the drama on Sunday was second to none, but it's a shame that the course conditions are a bigger headline than the competition.
The USGA should cancel all scheduled championships held on the lesser coast until they can learn to build and maintain half way decent championship caliber courses (Pebble not included).
