Haven't they basically done that already? ISIS are a bunch of radical Sunnis who are killing Shiites, which Iran is mostly made up of, left and right. And Iran has been fighting them through proxies for several years now. As they say in the Middle East, "it's on".Ibanez wrote:http://apnews.myway.com/article/2015071 ... 12d83.html
How long until ISIS declares Iran infidels and starts a fight with them? After 18 days of intense and often fractious negotiation, world powers and Iran struck a landmark deal Tuesday to curb Iran's nuclear program in exchange for billions of dollars in relief from international sanctions — an agreement designed to avert the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran and another U.S. military intervention in the Muslim world.
The accord will keep Iran from producing enough material for a nuclear weapon for at least 10 years and impose new provisions for inspections of Iranian facilities, including military sites. And it marks a dramatic break from decades of animosity between the United States and Iran, countries that alternatively call each other the "leading state sponsor of terrorism" and the "the Great Satan."

Wait. So Iran gets:
-140 billion
-no dismantlement of nuke program.
-no dismantlement of ballistic missile program.
-no anytime/anywhere inspections.
-end of arms embargo.
Am I missing anything?

Watch a Saudi-Israel coalition develop.

We're the worlds largest producer of oil. We don't need any of them and we don't need a military presence in the mid-east anymore. Let the Israelis do the Saudis killing for them. We'll be back in ten years to deal with whoever is left.

Well if Iran pinky-promised to not build weapons with their nuclear program then that's good enough for me.

Peace in our time with this deal. I seem to remember hearing that said somewhere before.
It must be terribly difficult being a diplomat and a negotiator on something like this. You know the deal you are making doesn't really change anything, but you have to go through the motions and do it anyway so that you can say you have a deal. At the end of the day, you've really accomplished little other than sound bites and papers that get signatures on them, but little of substance. I give Kerry credit, sticking around for something as hollow as this has to take a great deal of patience, especially when there wasn't a whole lot else to do optionwise.

I'll wait for all the details to come out and then evaluate it but the early details that are leaking out on Fox News don't sound pretty.BDKJMU wrote:Wait. So Iran gets:

Here's the key question though: If Congress rejects the deal, and let's go further & say they do it with a veto-proof 67 votes, then what happens? How much sooner does Iran become a nuclear power & what can be done about it?

Nothing can be done to stop them from becoming a nuclear power - that's what's silly about this whole thing. It was a surety as soon as they decided they wanted to get nuclear materials. All of this drama and negotiations were always just about how do we gracefully let them do it, without looking like we just gave up and let them do it. The rest of the world was never going to be okay with our approach of "sanctions forever", which was our only real card to play anyway, so we had to have a mechanism where the sanctions went away but it looked like we were in control of that, rather than it being a result of lack of will by the rest of the world. This has always been window dressing to cover the fact that, short of war, there really wasn't anything we could do to reliably keep Iran from getting nuclear weapons if they were intent on getting them.bluehenbillk wrote:I'll wait for all the details to come out and then evaluate it but the early details that are leaking out on Fox News don't sound pretty.BDKJMU wrote:Wait. Yup, I don't see them rejecting it either. Too much finger pointing and blame for an upcoming election year and no one wants to campaign on their stances on Iran. Iran was going to get nuclear weapons, treaty or no treaty.Skjellyfetti wrote:Congress isn't going to reject the deal.
