I can cherry-pick positive stuff that “men our age” (but you’re not even 60 yet, right?) have done, but what’s rhe point?

You seem to have sunk into a Spenglerian “OK, Boomer” slough of despond

I know a few guys from your generation willing to fully recognize its warts. Coincidentally they became more liberal late in life and after careers of immense success. I’m still holding out hope for you.

I’ve never said that Boomers have all the answers. Indeed, they’ve kicked the can down the road on important issues, which strikes me as cowardly. I haven’t become more liberal late in life, but I do appreciate liberty more than I used to. Especially the social kind.

MAQA - putting the Q into qrazy qanon qult qonspiracy theories since 2015.

It will probably be difficult for MAQA yahoos to overcome the Qult programming but they should give being rational & reasonable a try.

Is it two generations?

Although the Beatles insidious influence on music and society is pretty obvious.

Couldn't be more obvious - the second half of the Boomers grew up in a whole different world.

Yes. I’m not sure why the “boomer” generation extends as far as it does. I have literally ZERO in common with someone born in 1945-55. I mean, I have 5 sisters born in that timeframe and while technically we’re the same “generation”, we’re like oil and water.

Boomer generation is officially 1946-64. So oldest Boomers are about 73 now. Youngest 55.

It's the bulk of the offspring of those who fought in the big one. Essentially, children raised by people that were old enough to have experienced the sacrifices made during the war. My dad, who joined the Navy in the summer of 1941 (How's that for timing? ) was 37 when I was born in 1961.

Yes. My dad was 10 in 1941. He was 20 in 1951 when Korea started but he got a deferment because he already had a kid.

I’ve mentioned it before but you guys need to read the Fourth Turning...
Neil Howe and William Strauss admit that their model of the four generational archetypes is not the first time that the phenomenon has been observed in human history, however, they argue that American society has distinctly followed this pattern over the past 500 years. History moves in cycles, each one lasting the length of a long human life. The four archetypes are Hero, Artist, Prophet, and Nomad. When each archetype comes of age, there is a turning, or shift in societal mood. The four turnings are High, Awakening, Unraveling, and Crisis. During the High, there is confident growth as a new order takes shape. During the Awakening, it is a time of spiritual exploration and rebellion against the now-established order. Then comes the Unraveling, and increasingly troubled era as individualism triumphs over crumbling institutions. Last comes a Crisis - the Fourth Turning - when society passes through a great and perilous gate in history. As Nasim Taleb, author of The Black Swan, would be quick to point out, there is no guarantee that any society would pass through such a gate in history, just as the turkey has no guarantee of continuing to live past Thanksgiving.

I have been fascinated by their model ever since discovering it in 2009 while researching a paper on demographics. Since then, I've noticed that public figures from across the political spectrum have also become fascinated by the book, notably Bill Clinton, Tony Robbins, and Steve Bannon.

The Four Archetypes take a while to sink in - each archetype has a different experience and relationship to the other archetypal generations as they go through life stages

Well that explains a lot. What kind of dresses did they make you wear?

I was born in '54 and the split occurred shortly before that, right around 1950. Before that it was Happy Days and letter sweaters and TV wouldn't show Elvis below the waist when he was dancing. I remember Elvis but never got what the excitement was about. I was 10 when the Beatles first appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show and I was hooked from the first note especially with the reaction of the girls in the audience and my Dad in front of the TV. I just knew I had to be part of something that could crank up the old man like that.

He’s right about Yale students being regular people...

But I’ll be curious after he spends a couple years there... and meets some of the people who aren’t interested in his open mind

and also the people who disagree with his own personal definition of what he thinks a “safe space” is ... as defined by those “snowflakes@ he has apparently failed to encounter just yet
