Of course it would be difficult to determine as according to Wiki, the Spaniards and the church destroyed Mayan texts and along with them the knowledge of their writing system.
Maybe you can explain how the Catholic Church was responsible for the destruction of Mayan culture? If your answer is that Spain was a predominantly a Catholic country, and many in the Spanish military were therefore Catholic, don't bother.

It's amazing how any atrocity committed by the government/miltary which is predominantly Catholic is the responsibility of the Catholic Church. By that logic, let's talk about how the Protestant Church in America was responsible for slavery and the slave trade. But hey, most slave traders and owners were Protestants.

Servrtus and Macalyane were executed by Calvinists; and Campanella was jailed in Spain and then freed due to the personal demand of the Pope.

I didn't say the church destroyed Mayan culture.

But in answer to your question the line between conquest in the name of the church, the king, or the nation appears pretty thin by the colonial period. If I'm not mistaken European Monarch's derived their authority to rule from God, and the Church by this time felt no need to have much of a standing army as the good word was being spread at the point of the swords of many christian nation's.

It's similar to asking did muslim terrorists bring down the world trade center or did the Afghani's?

Many European monarchs claimed to rule by "divine right." That position was never accepted by the Roman Catholic Church, which has always taught that a monarch is inferior to divine and natural law. St. Thomas More, in fact, was executed by Henry VIII because he was refused to acknowledge that Henry ruled by divine right, and insisted that the monarchy was inferior to divine law.

Nice try, but you again fail. But hey, sorry for linking all christian religions together... in my book, they're all the same and have all been apart of travesties listed above. Keep on spinning your story though.

Oh man, that's from Calvin College... and they're saying it was the Catholics who imprisoned and killed Servetus... though I will throw you a bone and say Calvin has his hand in it.

Tell that to the poor Mayan architect slain by a cross wearing, god fearing Spaniard come to the new world to take the gold and convert the heathens. I know, I know they didn't neccessarily kill him for his science. But in some respects, it doesn't really matter.

You make a good point with the devine right of kings, none the less, from a historical perspective the line between the actions of church and state is often blurry.

Servetus was charged with heresy in France, but escaped before his trial.

He went to Geneva, was charged with heresy, and was executed by Calvinists.

Fact.

That's pretty funny, but there's also some irony in that many aboriginal cultures had a better understanding or at least more success with sustainable living than those who came after.

Pope Alexander VI gave Spain the right to colonize all of the New World West of the line dividing Spanish colonies and Portuguese colonies. The Pope and the Catholic church instructed Spain to convert the native populations (by force if necessary). The Catholic Church is culpable for the destruction of the Maya, Aztec, Incan, etc. civilizations.

Though... the current Pope still defends actions taken by conquistadores:

In a speech to Latin American and Caribbean bishops at the end of a visit to Brazil, the Pope said the Church had not imposed itself on the indigenous peoples of the Americas.

They had welcomed the arrival of European priests at the time of the conquest as they were "silently longing" for Christianity, he said.

Pretty fucking shameful. Indians "silently longing" for Christianity. :ohno: :ohno: :ohno:

Not to destroy your Hollywood-influenced perspective on things, but the Spanish Conquistadors did not bear any representation of the cross on their military garb, nor did they travel with that flag with the red cross on it (as frequently depicted). They carried the flag of Spain, which had the crest of the Spanish monrach on it.

The papacy denounced the use of the cross on military outfits during the Crusades, and has never wavered in its position that the cross should not be used for military purposes. The International Red Cross's use of the cross, on the other hand, has been approved by the Vatican.

Joe, back then there was little differenct between the government and the church. You are absolutely right about the protestant church, but again it's another diversion. Keep on point here or start another thread about the failure of faith and the church to prevent the slave trade.
