You could be confused by my comparing him to Berlusconi. Of course, since you probably have no idea who that guy was/is, since you know very little in life, you might be mistaken into thinking it was a comparison to be postitive of Trump. If you did know Berlusconi, you would realize that the comparison is not a flattering one for Trump, or frankly, for our electorate.

Under Obama and the Democrats, the middle class has lost purchasing power while the 1% has gained more wealth. Perhaps we should pay more attention to the party's records than their rhetoric.

I don't know, but I know one thing: Our tax code dis-incentivizes making more money. The more you make, the more tax breaks disappear. Can't claim losses on my rental property. No longer can claim personal deductions for kids/wife. I'm sure if I were uber rich I wouldn't have these problems, but for those of us NOT uber rich, we're getting screwed.kalm wrote:LeadBolt wrote:Under Obama and the Democrats, the middle class has lost purchasing power while the 1% has gained more wealth. I'm anti-death penalty, I'm pro gay rights (marriage, etc), I'm pro Title IX, I'm in favor of unions for public school teachers, I'm generally in favor of legalizing marijuana (the details matter to me, but as a matter of course generally for it), I would never get rid of the EPA (I think an argument can be made that some things they do now go too far for minimal environmental improvement versus the cost to implement, but there's no doubt the EPA's been a huge success story up to now), and I think we should be much more open to immigration than we are (although more targetted and legal immigration - let's bring in more smart people - I'm not as keen on allowing and fostering, or at the minimum, ignoring illegal immigration).
I think you would try to classify me more conservative on economic issues (I'm all for free trade for instance) but frankly, I think I'm middle of the road when it comes to economics, it's the whacko shift to the far left by liberals that makes me look relatively conservative. Just as conservatives have mainly been responsible for going way too far to the right on social issues, liberals have mirrored them in economic issues by shifting way too far to the left. The loons on the right are social demagogues and the loons on the left are economic utopians. But they're both looney.

What is the biggest "far left" economic initiative implemented in the past decade? Obamacare?

I have no issue with the concept that anyone have the ability to unionize. I think it's advantageous for public school teachers to do so, and I support that. For other professions, in this day and age, I think it's less advantageous, but I don't think it's clear cut enough to have a blanket statement that people should or shouldn't unionize.Skjellyfetti wrote:This is confusing. I think the far left has lost their way in terms of trade. Their aversion to free trade and overall globalization is akin to an ostrich putting their head in the ground. Economic isolationism, which some are pushing, is just non-sensical. It's like when I tease kalmie about his love for the Hawley-Smoot tariff and economic nostalgia like that. I actually don't even consider Obamacare to be an economic initiative. I don't care for the way Obamacare was crafted nor the way it was passed, but I'm generally in favor of government providing the means for everyone to get at least basic health care coverage.
