There should be a few bolded definitions at the end. Pick the one that applies to you. For instance, I was:

11–80: A first-generation upper-middle-class person with middle-class parents. Typical: 33.

You need to get to Waffle House stat! And go to church with an evangelical and hang with him while he smokes.

I haven't been out to breakfast other than a McDonald's or a place down the shore (we do Brown's or Ovis in OCNJ) in years. Must've been back when there were a lot more Denny's than there are now.93henfan wrote:You need to get to Waffle House stat! And go to church with an evangelical and hang with him while he smokes.
I do have a whole group of Born Again friends from college. There were intrigued that they could evangelize me. Amazing that I can't be around smokers anymore - I grew up in a house with two smokers, but once leaving there and not smoking myself, it's amazing how hard it is to be around smokers anymore. I'm actually shocked people still smoke, I'm not sure where they find the money.

I blame having kids for keeping in whatever bubble I'm in. If I didn't have to make sure they were doing well in school, playing sports, and just simply growing up I would have a lot more time to extend my bubble.

UP...as in down score.clenz wrote:Bang on the average working class.
My kids will, hopefully, fall into the next one up.Scoring
You got 77 points.
The higher your score, the thinner your bubble. The lower, the more insulated you might be from mainstream American culture.
See below for scores Charles Murray would expect you to get based on the following descriptions.
48–99: A lifelong resident of a working-class neighborhood with average television and movie going habits. Typical: 77.
42–100: A first-generation middle-class person with working-class parents and average television and movie going habits. Typical: 66.
11–80: A first-generation upper-middle-class person with middle-class parents. Typical: 33.
0–43: A second-generation (or more) upper-middle-class person who has made a point of getting out a lot. Typical: 9.
0–20: A second-generation (or more) upper-middle-class person with the television and movie going habits of the upper middle class. Typical: 2.

Re: Do You Live in a Bubble?
Again, cheesy questions.
0–20: A second-generation (or more) upper-middle-class person with the television and movie going habits of the upper middle class. Typical: 2.
In other words...not trash TV. Hardly any TV, except science shows (no questions that differentiate between intelligent TV and the crap that passes for prime time or daytime talk shows. And, I only saw Star Wars in the theater.
Smoking? Agree with Gannonfan...who smokes these days? Actually, there is one car in the parking lot of my son's school...puffs of smoke always coming out...and three teenagers are there to pick up on 5th grader. Poor kid...has to sit next to the three idiots who smell like an ash tray. Fun.
Now, if I had taken the poll years ago, as in many years ago, a couple of those restaurants would have been checked. I did take a looooooooong bus trip once...when I was 18, to Notre Dame. Took several when I worked for a ski tour/travel company a loooooooooooooong time ago. That question did not have an expiration date...and that probably saved me from a worse score.

Re: Do You Live in a Bubble?
I hardly watch any TV or movies and don't smoke.
I have, however, grown up poor and hardworking, first in my family to go to college, served honorably, worked on a factory floor and ached and choose to remain living rural with common folks.
Hence my high score and thin bubble.
I also ride Metro!

So anyways, get back to me in about 15 years when you
1) are more willing to try, well, just about anything new and outside your comfort zone
2) not so crotchety
3) have flown on a plane
4) have been to a foreign country that isn't our country's hat or our shitter
5) you own 3 businesses
Re: Do You Live in a Bubble?
1. More than willing already. Just haven't had opportunities I can afford to take without setting myself back fincially that would cripple me from being able to do #5.bandl wrote:clenz wrote: I've driven, to try to expand my horizons in the people I deal with.![]()

2. Never going to happen. Big fucking deal.
3. According to TBH that will happen by 2018
4. Meh
5. It might not be 3 but it will be at least one. TBH have a plan in place to make that happen by 2020. Who knows, I'd have 13 more years to get two more business ventures going.
That would put me at 43 with my own business and money to move my kids into a better life than I've had, and the ability to travel to Europe/Asia/South America if I wanted.
Not a bad life at 43

For #1, I'm just talking about watching GoT all the way through as fast as you can...you done with season 3 yet?
For #2, at least you're honest

2) Distillery
3) Bar; it is just an off-shoot of the distillery but as we've found out quickly it's an entirely different beast that actually requires more of my time than the distillery

Oh. Did you make it a separate entity so you could sell your product on the same site where you distill it? I know one of the breweries here did that.bandl wrote:1) Lawn biz, 800 customersGrizalltheway wrote:3 businesses? WTF is the third one, hookers and blow?

Re: Do You Live in a Bubble?
In NY, we have what's called a Farm Distillery license. With that license comes an extra perk that allows us to open a Branch Location where we can sell, just can't do production/distilling (nor would we since distilling equipment is expensive). Also in NY, we are allowed to serve and sell any NY farm-based product....beer, wine, cider or spirits. Besides our spirits that we sell by the bottle and in cocktails, we also sell over 50 different brands of spirits, 12 beers, 6 ciders and 10 wines. We make bank on beer, wine and ciderGrizalltheway wrote:Oh. Did you make it a separate entity so you could sell your product on the same site where you distill it? We have indoor seating for 90, up to 150 once we finish building out the upstairs (dragging our feet with this though), and we've only just begun to move outside onto the 26 acres we have at farm #2. Currently working on the permit to build an outdoor bar and music stage there.

52. Probably would have been closer to the bubble, but I don't go to movies or watch TV (mostly). I'm an entertainment elitist! Now, if they had asked about going to Gov't Mule and Steve Earle concerts, I might have scored higher.

So when TBH and I open our business, and we both start our "side project specialties" off that main business does that count as 2 other business ventures as well? If so, I truly am closer to you than you'd thinkbandl wrote:1) Lawn biz, 800 customersGrizalltheway wrote:3 businesses? WTF is the third one, hookers and blow?

Re: Do You Live in a Bubble?
I didn't grow up poor, but we struggled. One summer it was bad and the food we ate was mostly from what ever fish and/or crabs we had caught that afternoon. When I got to HS, my parents started making more money. I work hard, spent summers doing back breaking work in college. I never worked at a factory but I do logistic work after college that wore me out every day. I enjoy certain TV shows, only at night and don't watch many movies. I enjoy the outdoors too much...and beer. I enjoy drinking outside.
Turns out I might be a little gay. 89Hen 11/7/17
