Given that he is the most highly decorated Marine officer in Vietnam and all of his military experience was in combat, I'd say his opinion counts for more than mine or yours.

Some conservative writers -- Victor Davis Hanson and Jeremy Carl, to name two -- have picked up on the same theme as Ms. Smarsh. Most of the Trump voters I know in Slower Lower DE are not poor whites. But they do feel disrespected, and they distrust "elites" of all stripes.

I am only two generations removed from poor Scots Irish subsistence farmers and I still have relatives who would be considered Appalachians. The majority of the ones I know either don't vote, and the ones who do are evenly split between Johnson, Trump and Clinton.

Literally all of my conservative friends and family who would be considered middle or upper middle class are breaking for Trump almost to a man. Maybe I agree with the author because her conclusions closely match my own anecdotal experience.

In in my immediate family (out to first cousins) I used to be the only weirdo voting third party. Now there are 4-5 of us.

My siblings are far from poor whites and they are trump supporters for mostly those reason. They don't like the Clintons, aren't happy with Republicans and want to give the bird to the government.

The book mentioned in the article is very good if you haven't read it.

Image

From a former marine and Yale Law School graduate, a probing look at the struggles of America’s white working class through the author’s own story of growing up in a poor Rust Belt town.

Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis—that of poor, white Americans. The disintegration of this group, a process that has been slowly occurring now for over forty years, has been reported with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. In HillbillyElegy, J.D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hanging around your neck.

The Vance family story began with hope in postwar America. J.D.’s grandparents were “dirt poor and in love” and moved north from Kentucky’s Appalachia region to Ohio in the hopes of escaping the dreadful poverty around them. They raised a middle-class family, and eventually one of their grandchildren would graduate from Yale Law School, a conventional marker of success in achieving generational upward mobility. But as the family saga of Hillbilly Elegy plays out, we learn that J.D.’s grandparents, aunt, uncle, sister, and, most of all, his mother struggled profoundly with the demands of their new middle-class life, never fully escaping the legacy of abuse, alcoholism, poverty, and trauma so characteristic of their part of America. With piercing honesty, Vance shows how he himself still carries around the demons of his chaotic family history.

A deeply moving memoir, with its share of humor and vividly colorful figures, Hillbilly Elegy is the story of how upward mobility really feels. And it is an urgent and troubling meditation on the loss of the American dream for a large segment of this country.

I read this book. The last 50 pages, where he talks about his personal success and happy marriage, sort of offset the first 200 -- which were much more interesting. I give it a B.

I'll say it again: We have more leisure time than ever before, more easy access to information than ever before, more formal education than ever before, and we are woefully civically ignorant as a whole. The white working class is a big part of that problem. And I don't live in some white liberal suburban bubble, I'm around these people. This board is a bunch of erudite political and history scholars compared to these people.

It's not just working class whites, though. You'd better believe there's a lot of mrkleans out there who when you ask them why they don't vote Republican they won't give you anything other than "just don't like them".

Of course, the white working class is one of the few groups of people the Liberal PC Handbook permits shitting on without 100 lashes. Remember when Nancy Pelosi said there was no point in trying to court the WWC vote because they only care about "god, guns, and gays"? Imagine some Republican pointing out how blindly black people vote donk. You'd be able to hear the outrage in the far corners of the world.

It's beyond my comprehension that so many donks are patting themselves on the back for nominating Hillary Clinton. It's like bragging about winning a cooking competition because the other team set the whole kitchen on fire while you only completely burned the entire casserole.

I do not know a single college-educated Republican who voted Trump. That includes friends, family, and coworkers. The polls show the same trend as my anecdata. It's not the white middle class that nominated Trump.
