2017 NHL Thread

Post by 89Hen »

OK, tired of keeping track of the NHL on the Wentzadelphia thread and the season is past the midway point so it's time for a dedicated thread.

So the Metro Division is still the class of the league, but some teams have finally started to catch up. Four of the top seven teams in the league are from the Metro and they are 86-35-19 vs the Western Conference to date. The West also has the Avs and Coyotes to thank for padding their win totals. Those two teams are almost historically bad right now.

Right now it sure looks like the Caps are going to be the one to beat for the President's Trophy, but unless they get past the second round of the playoffs, it's meaningless.

Caps have the lowest goals against in the league at 2.1 goals per game and they're 5th in scoring.... for now. They have scored 4 goals or more in all of their last 13 games against anyone not named Ottawa (beat them 1-0 and 2-1) and have scored 5 or more goals in 10 of last 13, during which they've gone 12-0-1.

Carolina is looking to extend their 4-game losing streak.

Eh. They are a good team, but definitely not great. That 16 game winning streak (which ended with a resounding thud) was remarkable for sure. Without that winning streak though, they're just a middle-of-the-pack team in the standings. They've been 5-6 since. They'll almost certainly make the playoffs, but as the 7 or 8 seed.

Caps would be better off not running away with the division/conference title just yet. Last year they had everything locked up with about 10 games to go (or more, if I'm not mistaken). They had nothing to play for through the end of the season, which I think certainly hurt them in the playoffs. Or, better yet, just gave them another excuse as to why they tanked in the second round again.

So it's his fault and not the players who are actually on the ice?

They listened to you last night. Not sure why they struggle with Ottawa so much. :suspicious:

All part of their coach's master plan this season. His instructions are being executed to a T.

In 9 of his 10 seasons his teams finished first in their division, and never once made a SCF.

It's a wonder that teams even have players. They should just let the coaches discuss strategies and tactics in a debate forum and then have a vote on who would win the game.

Funny, the Lame Ducks have won more cups (not under Boudreau, of course) than the "State of Hockey". They've also never been relocated to Texas.

The Ducks have been around a few more years than the Wild.
The Wild have never relocated to Texas either.

Yeah, having it happen with one team is forgivable, but when it happens a second time it's hard to dismiss. I loved Gabby when he was in DC, even to the point that I rooted for him in Anaheim (similar to Andy Reid in KC). But until he goes deep in the playoffs, I'd be worried if I were a Wild fan.
