So the Metro Division is still the class of the league, but some teams have finally started to catch up. Four of the top seven teams in the league are from the Metro and they are 86-35-19 vs the Western Conference to date. The West also has the Avs and Coyotes to thank for padding their win totals. Those two teams are almost historically bad right now.
Right now it sure looks like the Caps are going to be the one to beat for the President's Trophy, but unless they get past the second round of the playoffs, it's meaningless.
Caps have the lowest goals against in the league at 2.1 goals per game and they're 5th in scoring.... for now. They have scored 4 goals or more in all of their last 13 games against anyone not named Ottawa (beat them 1-0 and 2-1) and have scored 5 or more goals in 10 of last 13, during which they've gone 12-0-1.
