Yeah, that is going to be the next thing they go after.

Plenty of businesses need VPNs. But, I have no doubt that there will be efforts to make them illegal for ordinary citizens.

Maybe there's a way to block it, but I'm lazy and stupid when it comes to internet security, like most people. I'm not saying we should allow more, but this seems like old news.

How about this invasion of privacy? If a lender pulls your credit report because you're applying for a loan (or pre-approval) the credit bureaus can sell the information that you've had your credit pulled by a lender to other lenders. So Wells Fargo knows to call you about a mortgage because you're shopping with your bank or lender. I still can't believe that one is allowed, but I know for a fact it is.
You could argue that the credit bureaus giving out information that lenders are pulling your credit information is a consumer friendly thing - you may have only looked at one lender when if you were presented with more options you might find a lender that gives you a better deal. That's a good thing, no? Regardless, you don't need to act on other lenders trying to contact you. I just started a new loan and I politely ignored the e-mails and phone calls from other vendors trying to get my business. It wasn't that hard.
If you did argue that, they you'd be in favor of this resolution.

You go to 5 site looking for golf clubs, then when you come here you see ads for Ping or Titelist, that's Google AdSense. It's still data collection but, as I understand, it isn't being sold. It's being used to market products.
I'm not sure I understand the difference. Does it really matter to me if Comcast or Google AdSense is selling me the products for which I've recently searched? I also already get lots of solicitation e-mails from companies with whom I've never used or inquired about. Seems like this selling of info, or bombarding me with relative ads is already happening.

I don't know. VPNs have been around a while for people that stream and download. The gov't hasn't stopped them yet but maybe this is a start.

I guess we'll see.

VPNs are ubiquitous in the foreign service. My router was invaluable to me in Nigeria since most online vendors won't sell to Nigerian IP addresses. Also helpful in Vietnam where the government used to like to play monkey games with the firewall.

Also goid for getting the US version of Netflix but Netflix found a way to detect vpns. But now I know a code so gonna try it when i git to BKK

How much public support does this have? If you polled Americans, what percentage would say 'sure...let them use my private information'.

So why is it a priority and why does it pass?

(Hint: if you still support Citizens United and our current system of bribery, you're a bit of a dumbass... )

Right, and there won't be any consequences (i.e. not getting reelected), because by the next election cycle this will be long forgotten and people will be focused on the latest season of The Voice.

A fat check from a telecom company speaks a lot louder than a phone call, email, or letter from a citizen, unfortunately.

That's right. And if protecting our privacy we're a good idea people would have voted for candidates who supported it. So it's clearly a bad idea.
